We are all interested Orpheo!
I once rant into a guitar that was too bright with a Screamin Deamon, and a hard rock tone was wanted, so an A8 was a great solution. Not a hybrid, I just mention it since Orpheo said Seth/Screamin.
As for what Blueman says on the A5 mag on a Custum/59 hybrid; shouldnt it have come with an A8? It just seemed more logical IMO. But I would be lying if I said that Ive tried that pup with A2, UOA5 & A8. For you whats the best mag for that pup Blueman?
The screaming 8 is a great pup in the bridge of a brighter toned guitar. But it's so, so good in the neck position.
That's an example of a tone goal that's very different than mine. You like warm, dark neck PU's, so you're going to approach neck hybrids differently than I do. What sounds great for one of us, may not be very good for the other. That's why people need to think thru what they're looking for, and choose the coils and magnets accordingly. This isn't a one-size-fits-all. When you make a hybrid, you're creating a new PU. What do you want from it?
I have tried approximately 100 hybrids, with documentation. I have a good memory but even I can't memorize 100 hybrids.
I have tried the PG/Seth BRIDGE and I think it's a great pickup with an alnico 2. It's more open than the PG, a bit more fluid than the seth. I did notice a huge difference in using a slug or screw seth. I didn't care for the slug seth, I preferred the screw: bit more power in that coil. For some reason, the Seth is a bit less powerful than the PG and I felt the need to compensate a bit for that difference. It's a great PAF style pickup, I have to admit. it's perhaps my favorite of all PAF style pickups. It's got cut but isn't harsh. It's got power but isn't hot. It works amazing in a lot of applications.
I also love the sethB/Screaming demon Alnico 8. great medium output pickup. It's around 9.1k, but it's got so much chunk. great pickup.

The one in bold is the only one that failed. Miserably. That pickup sounded honky, wonky and just plain horrible.
I was using mostly stock magnets until A8's become popular. I put those in a number of bridge PU's (never in a neck one). It gave me the mids and warmth I was looking for. Then Addiction FX showed up with UOA5's. Big event! I was the first guy here (as far as I know) to buy and try his UOA5's. First PU was a C5, and the UOA5 sounded great in it. Not as high output as an A8, and a looser, more vintage feel, with more dynamics and texture, like the best qualities of an A2 and A5, without the downsides of either. That's been my 'go to' bridge magnet for bridges for several years now. I've recently started using UOA5's in the neck slot, when an A2 is a little too warm. For a '59/Custom hybrid, UOA5's, A2's, and A8's would be the best magnets to get the tones I want, depending on how vintage or aggressive I want the PU to sound. Matter of taste and genre.
Now that I'm making hybrids, I'm using more A2's (bridge and neck), as it's a nice fit with the brighter, sharper sound of many hybrids. The bigger the difference between coils, the warmer the magnet I use. My brightest, clearest neck HB's I own are hybrids with UOA5's (who'd have thought?). I still get the rich texture, and at the same time actually add treble and high-end by having unbalanced coils. That's a win-win for me.
In making hybrids, you need to have goals in mind before you start. For me, it's getting the bridge and neck PU's EQ's closer to each other (warm, full bridge and sharp, clear neck). Other players want different things. Having goals guides your coil and magnet selection. If you don't have that figured out up front, you're just wandering around and may or may not stumble on something you like. With the OP, what is he looking for from a hybrid, that he's not getting from a stock PU? That question should be answered before he starts his quest, which is why I've given him the info I have on what hybrids work and why.

Those Invader/X2N must look mean as hell! Sacrilege too, haha. I can imagine that babe with this seth n/ screaming demon, alnico 8. :saeek:
Sorry but you're absolutely wrong. I prefer my neck pickups to be clean and clear, open and articulate. I want warmth with treble detail that can be rolled off with the tone pot. The screaming demon is one of the best neck pickups I have ever, ever heard...always: clarity, articulation, precision and versatility.
I thought you liked them darker, must be thinking of someone else. But still, for me a Screamin' Demon is too hot and warm for the neck slot. I've made a bridge hybrid with a Screamin' Demon coil. I like my neck hybrids to be around 8K, and non-hybrid necks to be mid to high 7K.
The thing is, mixing DMZ and SD is a bit hard since the holes for the coils don't match with the baseplate.
Try it before you judge it. You know perfectly well that DC resistance says nothing about output.
So what did you do? Drill new holes in one half of the baseplate? I imagine you putting a SD baseplate on top of the DMZ to see where the new holes will go, but maybe there was a better solution.
I don't need experience swapping coils to tell you didn't answer his question, since at no point in your post (which, I'm not being sarcastic, is fact filled and educational) did you *actually* address the pickups that the OP inquired about.
I think answering the OPs question as to how a Pearly Gates & Seth hybrid would be a good start.
It would be curious definitely. One slightly hotter potted coil, one unpotted slightly weaker. The output difference isn't as great as the 59/c, and an a2 mag would be the common factor and the obvious choice since you don't want it to be TOO powerful or anything. It would certainly be bright, probably almost single coil levels of treble response. I can't REALLY speak because I don't know how a potted and unpotted coil would react. Maybe if it's weird someone could re-pot it? Then maybe even mag swapping could help out. Just theorizing. It could be the greatest pickup ever. But if ONE coil is or becomes microphonic, you will likely get ALL of the bad aspects of a microphonic pickup. Unless since only one pickup is microphonic the overtones won't be as harsh and you might be able to get more out of it since the microphonic half is not only weaker, but half the strength of a fully microphonic humbucker. I'd want to see it done.
