PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

I am still waiting to hear back from SD but I'm starting to think they only include a trim ring with the Trembuckers now since they are unique and mine just didn't get one. I ordered direct from SD and my order was delayed for some reason? Someone likely just forgot to include the trim ring. With different height/shape rings on different guitars, maybe SD decided it's not worth it to include them with regular Humbuckers?

Now if I can just get a Trembucker ring from SD and find a ring off the shelf that matches? My first Trembucker. It does align better with the tremolo bridge.

I don't think they've ever included rings with the standard size humbuckers. No idea why they include them with some trembuckers (my tb-8 was a gates sig and did not include one) but not standards. Regular rings have fit fine IME, but I think all those I've tried with tb have been from emg, but should be the same size as the all-parts stuff.

I'll just holler one more time that SD should do a flat version of the Dimebucker ring. It's a nice fitted ring that hugs a trembucker perfectly with no gaps.
They should do it in a thin flat for neck and 3/16ths flat for bridge (only included when you buy a matched set of pickups).
It would be good for business IMO.

Trembuckers don't fit standard regular sized rings, and not everyone wants to cut up or otherwise modify their existing mounting rings.

Everything I've ever tried fits into rings that are suitable for emgs. That's what my tb-8 invader is in. It's a near perfect fit.

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

OK here it is;

length of trembucker at the cap of the bobbin is 70.6mm

length of the cut-out in basic emg-suitable rings is 70.1mm

Theoretically it won't fit, but it actually fits fine because you can simply angle it slightly as you screw it up through the ring when installing, and then once it's past the cap it has plenty of clearance around the cloth anyways. It doesn't even rub the cloth.

If you're needing to back it down where the bobbin's cap is flush and level with the ring then you're using too tall of ring to begin with.
I always try to use a ring that allows the pickup to sit out but not way out from the ring.
Usually for my guitars/pickups it's the 5mm/3/16" tall flat rings at the bridge.

My experience is the TB-14 Trembucker does not fit into a humbucker mounting ring because the combined size of the windings, the connections bundle and the tape covering these is a couple of mm too big to fit without modification. Of course I had to modify plastic mount rings, pickguards, or otherwise swap to the LARGER Trembucker supplied mounting ring each time I installed this pickup on different guitars. I never bought any Trembuckers apart from that one since I'm keen to avoid the hassle.

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

The physical size of a trembucker is wider than that of a standard humbucker. It'll be a very tight fit in a standard spaced ring. Hence the reason trembuckers ship with a ring. Every one I bought new did. It's been quite a while since I got a trem-spaced Duncan so I don't know if they stopped including rings or not.

Now, to make it confusing, DiMarzio's F-Spaced pickups are the same size as their standard spaced pickups. The difference is the pole spacing in the bobbin itself. The overall size of the pickup remains the same.

I was able to get a trem-spaced Screamin' Demon in to a standard spaced pickguard route but it is a snug fit.

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

SD is sending me the TB ring they apparently just forgot. I'm going to have to find a Matte black standard HB ring the same height when I get the TB ring and take a few measurements.

Do over? i probably should have just got a standard HB for the bridge.

They have always worked fine in my Trem guitars . . . but, oh well! Still looking forward to playing this thing again . . . EVENTUALLY! With my health, it's been sitting for over 9 months with a dead pup.

Another week won't kill me . . . :smack: Um I hope?

Let me suggest next time ordering your pickups from ebay seller Banjomikez . I've never waited more than 3 or 4 days after ordering a pickup from him and I can`t say Ive ever bought a brand new Duncan with no pickup ring included

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

Only COVERED trembuckers need the "special" (or modded) mounting-ring.

Personally I'd use a shorter ring at the neck or just use a pair of 5mm/3/16th" for that Carvin.
I'm guessing the strings sit fairly low from the body like most Carvins.

Here's the SD rings from my favorite online parts store. Great prices on guitar wire btw.
Good thing about GE is they can ship regular usps for cheap($3.99) when you are under the $49-free mark.

Well, I got the TB ring from SD and ordered a flat regular HB ring from StewMac that was supposed to be a satin finish. But it was quite glossy. So, chut chut, with some flat black . . .

Need to get some strings on the ole girl and take it for a test drive!

Re: PG Trembucker and Jazz are finally coming . . .

Just realized I never updated. Complete with strings.

I know, I need to actually record something but, in the interim, these pups really woke the ole girl up. Being a nearly 14 lb hunka hunka burnin walnut, the guitar has always been a tad dark but very warm with the stock Carvin S22s. In both cases, these pups have made the guitar a tad brighter without sacrificing warmth. Add in the blend-able piezos in the Gotoh, got a bazillion new tones to explore. And, as I suspected, these pups split SO much better than the S22s did. S22s split were almost like just quieter humbuckers that now hum. I'm finding really wonderful combos splitting these and then using the in/out phase to get some brand new wonderful tones to use. Likely just the walnut again but I cannot quite get to full on Tele quack until I blend in just a touch of piezos in split pup mode. But then, it nails it pretty darn good.

Humbuckers: Neck, Bridge, Neck and Bridge, in phase, out of phase, barely to complete blending with piezos.

Split: Neck, Bridge, Neck and Bridge, in phase, out of phase, barely to complete blending with piezos

So many tones I am guessing it would take about a 10 minute video Humbucker and Split to properly cover it all but I'll see what I can do?

VERY happy so far . . .
