PGn or A2Pn?

I have a Custom Custom in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Which of those two pickups would match better?

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

I have a PG matched with my CC in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and I think they go great together.

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

When it comes to those two neck pickups, flip a coin, really. :)
They both match up well and are equally popular around here.

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

Depends on what you mean by "match"

If you mean give the same fatness of treble, it's the A2P

If you mean blends for well balanced sounds when both pups on - PG

I like the PG. I think it's the ultimate LP neck sound, and I like the way it balances TONALLY with the CC bridge. The A2P is just overkill on the fatness for me with the CC. Both are cool output-wise.

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

Either one IMHO. They both sing, it just depends how you want it to sing.

The APH has sweeter cleans though

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

You can always work the tone control on the PG to approximate the A2P. You can't gnarly up an A2P

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

I would say the A2P "matches" the CC better but the PGn "compliments" the CC to make a more useful combination. Of the two I vote PGn, it's sweet in an LP ...

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

It's a tough choice. I really like the APH, but it can get a bit TOO warm and smooth, depending on the guitar. In the right guitar, one that is a bit on the bright and snappy side, it is the sweetest pickup on earth. It's still my favorite SD neck pickup.

The PG has a little more sizzle, clarity and brightness. It's still smooth though. My choice for an Epi is the APH. The bodies are usually alder instead of Mahogany, so I think the APH works better. However, if anyone know's good tone in an LP, Epi or otherwise, it's Jolly.

You can't go wrong with either one.

If you want to hear each one of them, click on "My Soundclips" down in my sig.

Heavens Door is the APH in a double fat strat. It does all the clean rythym and the leads.

There is a soundlip called PG(n) there also. It's just a raw clip of a PG thru my JCM800 to a backing track...in a Dean Hardtail.

At least these should give you some idea of what the pickups sound like.

Awesome advice. as usual. By matching, I mean tonally, like switching from bridge to neck. I don't want a radical difference. Looks like PG is ahead, because of the quoted statement!

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

Go PG, on of the best neck pickups SD makes IMO and it matches so well with any of the custom series in the bridge

Re: PGn or A2Pn?

While both are great pickups and I actually do have and use both (A2Pro in the neck of my Yamaha SG2000 with a CC and a PG in the neck of my Moderne with a PGb) the PG is the clean winner IMO...in fact as soon as I stop being so damn lazy Im gonna swap my A2Pro for a PGn!

That might be the case with OD, but on a clean channel with the controls wide open, the APHn shimmers on the high end while the PGn snarls. They're both very cool sounds, and thankfully I can have both.

I can see that. There is no doubt a bit of grit that a PG just "Has" and I think it's a good thing - but that's me.

we really are splitting hairs here. I could flip a coin and be happy either way. You can lose. Based on preferences it's going to be win big, or win really, really, really big!
