PG's and DR's.

I just took the Slash AII Pro's out of my Daisy Rock, and put in a PG set. At the same time, I tried some new DR Pure Blues strings.



I know you should only change one thing at a time, but I needed new strings. But wow! This thing has a sweet bite and snap. These PG's might be my new fav pups. They're actually very close to the Slash's, but with a smidgen more "bite". Even though they sound great clean, they beg to be played loud. My wife loves these because I tell her to go shopping so I can blast them. I haven't even tried them with distortion yet because they have their own natural dirt. In a good way. Clean dirt, if that makes any sense. Controlled attitude. Polite nastiness. Nasty politeness? Am I overselling these yet?

I also love these DR Pure Blues strings. They remind me of the Everly B-52's. Similar, but different. I'm not sure how much of the "snap" is the strings or the PG's. But it's a killer combo any way you shake it. Has anyone else tried these strings?

Yes, just remember if you don't know to take the precautions printed inside the package to put a bend in the wound strings before installing, as round core strings the windings can come unwrapped on those if you don't. If you already know this, I apologize, it's just that many don't do that and then complain that a certain would string is "bad". Other than that, they are on my short list of good pure nickel wrap round core strings, I like them but not as much as Pyramid Classics, but they are more expensive. Enjoy your new setup!.

I used them for years. I quit using them when I began to run into too many sets with intonation issues (usually D or A if memory serves) despite doing the pre bend. Still used Sunbeams on my basses though. Never had issues with the Sunbeams.
Personally, I think they had some wrap issues during manufacturing. I'll pick up a couple sets next time I order strings and see if I no longer have issues.

I've been using DRs since about 2005; first Pure Blues while I use Tite Fits these days. I've had a few bad D strings over the years, but DR has been great about replacing the occasion bad string I happen to get. They also seem better in terms of consistency these days, I haven't had a string that failed to intonate in the last 5 or 6 years.

I've also been using their coated bass and acoustic strings since they came out and I recently started using their coated electric strings on some of my less-often-played guitars. So far they've been great; sound almost identical to Tite Fits and seem to last forever.

I've had a few bad D strings over the years, but DR has been great about replacing the occasion bad string . . .

That's good to know. The G string snapped while I was tuning it. Maybe they'll send me a replacement.

I used them for years, then hit a streak where every set from half a dozen vendors had problems. I never got any response from the company when I politely inquired about a resolution to the problems. I just picked up a set of DR bass strings, hoping the problems have been resolved by now.

ive been using dr pure blues for years, great strings. they did have a bad run a few years back but they sent me a bunch of sets when i emailed and followed up with a phone call. i sent them a few of the broken ones when the asked too

The snap is all from the PGs

The DR pure blues are darker than steels iirc

Glad you're liking the PG's in your Daisy Rock, but for gosh sakes man turn the distortion on! Those pickups scream for overdrive at least. The PG's have a great snap and bite to them, and your description is exactly as I remember them. I have an 80's set of PG's waiting to be tried next. The neck is actually from the 90's, so I'm on the lookout for an old 80's neck.

BTW, I'm going to try and install the Slash Set tonight if I can. My wife had dental surgery today so it just depends on what she needs from me.

I'm glad you're loving the PG's so much. I love it when that happens.

I think what you've discovered is the sound of pure nickel wound round core strings. All strings were pretty much pure nickel back in the 50's-early 60's (Gibsons did have a different formulation that is a nickel compound). That is the sound of the early rock'n'roll guitar recordings. Manufacturers changed to hex core to avoid the problems of round core wound strings unwinding when not installed correctly, and later changed to nickel-coated steel wrap wire (NPS) for a slightly brighter sound. Many people think round core strings sound better because there is more direct contact between the windings and the cores of the wound strings than there is with hex core. The Tite-Fits are also round core, but NPS winding, they have the benefit of a round core, but slightly brighter because of the nickel-steel windings. I use both types on different guitars, but always round core.

I used to use those when they first came out, they were round core then, developed in association with John Callaham. He specified round core, which they were for a time. All of a sudden one day I noticed they had taken the "round core" blurb on the package, meaning they had changed them to hex core. I stopped using them at that point, and changed to other pure nickel round core strings. They are still pure nickel, but since they were supposed to be round core, I thought that was a cheesy move.

Yep them's the one.

Great "pure nickel" tone with every set (and I can't even try to count how many sets I've gone through) at a fair price.

There's the regular (non-burnished) Nickel Rockers (and EJ associated set), but those have different core and therefore higher tension comparatively.

Glad you are liking the PGs! Great great pickups–I especially like them in Strats...but if I ever get a Les Paul again I'd definitely put a PG sset in them. Enjoy!

PG's are kick ass. I don't have anything to put a set in...... yet.

For strings, I like EB Slinky and their Rock 'N' Roll Slinky, 10-46. The Rock 'N' Roll sets are amazing.
