Can you take the nickel or gold cover off this pickup and it will still stay intact and look normal? Thanks for any help.

Re: Phat Cat

Kent Armstrong makes a humbucker sized P-90 in a black plastic cover that would be close (looks wise) to having a hum/p-90 sans cover.

Re: Phat Cat

Do not take the cover off this pickup. The cover is what's holding it all together.

I got the same question from the guitarist in a major band, and before I could return his call, he took off the cover. And regretted it.

His pickup is being held together with duct tape presently.

Re: Phat Cat

Why take off the cover? it shields the pickup and makes it alot quieter. I put a set in my 335 and they won't come out. IMO, they are some of the best pickups SD makes.

Re: Phat Cat

I took the cover off of one of mine to remove some windings... I wanted a cleaner version of the neck pickup... around 7k.

Big mistake... it's now going to cost around $60.00 to get it rewound in the Custom Shop!

Re: Phat Cat

^How are the Rio Grande ones?

And the reason I wanna take it off is because I'm putting it into a Fender Strat HH guitar and it would look really stupid with a shiny covered pickup on it.

Man I feel like I'm a rio-grande rep lol.. All the referals.

I just really like their unique tone.

Looks pretty cool to me. There's nothing wrong with chrome-covered bucker size pickups in a Fender...:smokin:

I'm really diggin' that Fat Bastard right now, sounds really good. I think I'm goin' with a Fat Bastard (B) and Bastard (N) combo. Sound good?

And báratta, that tele looks fine, but the strat with the chrome pups is really ugly IMO.

Re: Phat Cat

It looks cooler with 2 PHAT CATS

Those pups ROCK

makes me want to buy another guitar just to put them in.

BTW a strat with 2 phats hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: Phat Cat

That is because it is mine, and some funny dude made it look all wrong in some bad photoshop attack;)
Just for illustration purposes.:naughty: I'm glad that you found my super-dooper PS work to be amusing. Hmm, perhaps it's time for me to install a floyd and a trio of pink anodised lipstick pickups.;)

Re: Phat Cat

If you don't know what you are doing, don't take off its cover.

I've added some #42 wire to my bridge phatcat (8.90K), and got it tapped to work at ~11.00K mode as well. I loved the results, but that whole thing wasn't easy. I have to confess that there were times when I was really angry and frustrated and I wanted to throw away that beautiful pickup! :smack: Closing it up was a pain in the neck. ;)

PS. Due to squealing, I had to open it up again. :yell: Luckily it worked. :smokin:
