Phat Cats are a great PU with one drawback, the A2 magnets. For many (warm) Gibson design guitars (which is where most logically end up), they can be very dark in the neck (almost no treble), and weak & thin in the bridge, overpowered by the neck PC. If I couldn't change the magnets in them, I might not have any; but once I discovered that it's very easy to swap magnets, and that two different kinds can be paired together, that changed evrything. Currently I have 9 Phat Cats in various guitars, either as a pair, or in the neck with a HB bridge. All the A2's have been taken out (and given away to forum members).
In the neck I use A5/A5, A5/A4, and A5/A3 pairs which opens them up so they really sound like single coils. In the bridge I use A8/A4 and A8/A5 which gives them more output & fullness. I also use these magnet pairs in true P-90's.
P-94's are very good also, and with the stock A5 magnets are going to sound better in more guitars than a Phat Cat with A2 stock magnets. I really wish Duncan would use A5's or pair up different magnets. There's a lot of tonal options possible, which at this point are left to us to explore on our own.
