I agree HC reviews are for the most part crap, but when it comes to tone, everyone is different. There are some Duncans I think sound absolutely horrid, but get great reviews/recommendations here all the time

Take the reviews of the Kent Armstrong p90's with a grain of salt. I had a set of the sky manufactured stacked p90's and they suck!

As to how close a Phat Cat is to a real P-90, consider this: a Phat Cat IS a P-90. To make a Phat Cat, you take a P-90 bobbin, slice the edges off with a band saw, wind it to vintage P-90s specs, put two south-facing magnets, and stick it on a humbucker bottom plate and under a humbucker cover. Take the cover off, and what do you have? A P-90 (with the bobbin edges sliced off). I’m a P-90 player. I have three P-90 guitars. In my well-informed but admittedly biased opinion, the Phat Cat sounds like what it is: a P-90.

The one area where the Phat Cat doesn’t sound like a P-90 is in terms of hum and noise and I believe that’s because the metal covers and wax potting do a better job of shielding and cutting down on noise than plastic covers.
