Piano and keyboard players...any tips for getting one hand to do something different?

Oh, how my biggest problem has always been trying to get both hands to play different things, ha ha. I can't even do the intro to Won't Get Fooled Again! Any exercises, tips, websites (free) that can help me out? I can play some basic chords, and I'd like to get back to at least where I was in the 80s, which was a step above rank beginner, lol.

If you can afford a teacher go that way. Or, If you can read music get yourself an easy self teaching book and start playing the songs. At a certain point your brain just clicks in and it all starts happening.

Erm, are you trying to develop independent hand use for keyboards or for guitar? (Ain't no keyboards on WGFA.) These are two different disciplines.

As mentioned above, get a teacher or get a good tutorial thing and then practice.
I will admit my left hand keyboard technique is not very good... then again I don't practice keys very much.
As with anything that involves doing two different things at the same time (such as singing and playing) it's all about timing and multitasking. Some people find it much easier than others.

No, it's for keyboard, not guitar. Although I suck at it on guitar as well :). I'm in school and on a very fixed income, so I can't afford a teacher. Just looking for tips or websites kinda like this, but for keys. I tried searching the web, but almost everything turns out to be a link trying to sell you something.

Do you read music? The beginner books like "Teach Yourself to Play Piano" give you a simple bass line and melody or chords to play and they work you up to using your hands independently.

I'm not fluent, but I can figure out the notes. That sounds like a plan. Thank you. I'll check that out. Maybe I can find some of it online, or something similar.

you know, when I was playing piano still, I found the best way to figure out how to get my hands playing completely different things was to practice them very slowly first, so you have time to figure out the actual timing of the notes/finger positions.

Play with a metronome, excruciatingly slowly, until you know what it should sound like, then build up your speed and fluency.

Yes--probably the only way to do it. Thanks for the advice. Luckily my synth is a workstation and has a metronome built in.
