Re: Pick your favourite Champ
I'm a big fan of the Super Champ. I have two of them, one is an export model which I bought in '93, the original owner had swapped the speaker for a Celestion G10S-50, and I have it set up with late 1950's RCA blackplates (6V6's and 12AX7/12AT7) throughout. The other is a US model which I bought for backup 3 years ago on eBay, and it turned up with original tubes, speaker and the difficult to find footswitch.
It would seem that Rivera's idea with the Super Champ was to make it a hybrid. It can be seen as a Champ on steroids, or a smaller Deluxe Reverb. The lead channel is remarkably Boogie-ish, with a wonderful saturated lead tone or beautifully musical crunch when backed off. Either way you look at it, they are extraordinary amps, incredibly versatile and stupidly loud for their small size and 18w rating. I use it in all sorts of live conditions, and it shines in the studio. I think the Super Champ would have to take the award for the most versatile Champ, although the SS rectifier, whilst giving it a little more clean headroom, probably makes it a little less sweet than the Tweeds and BF's.
