Picked up a few set neck guitars recently.

Re: Picked up a few set neck guitars recently.

Heh, I almost got one of those on a GC blowout years ago. I probably would have if not for the pickups. It looked like they were some funky size that couldn't be replaced easily.

I like the bridge pickup in it. The neck pickup needs to be a little brighter but I think I can wire it in parallel, and take the pots out of the circuit. :D

Nice stuff Dominus.

Do you have an opinion on set necks? I know guys like Ed Roman hated them because he said the glue dulled the tone by coming between the neck and body. Yet, I like my set neck Hamer Scarab XT the best of all my guitars acoustically--it even sounds better than my Charvel Desolation neck thru.

Re: Picked up a few set neck guitars recently.

Ed Roman was *very* opinionated. We'll leave it at that. :D

I usually preferred bolt on guitars, as I could swap the neck when the frets started getting too much wear. (I also preferred maple fretboards for a time, which you're just not going to find easily on set neck / neck through guitars.) I figured out that I typically don't own a guitar long enough to wear the frets that much. ;)

Going from brighter toned woods with maple bolt on necks to mahogany set neck guitars changed a *lot* of variables for me, so it would be difficult for me to figure out what made the most difference as far as tone goes. I think it still comes down to each individual piece of wood. (Although, if it was easy to swap them, I would be tempted to start putting maple fretboards on some of these.)

Got another Ibanez ARC100 on the way for $100 delivered. I can only imagine the text conversation that went on here:

"Hey, I sent you a pic of an Ibanez guitar a guy is trading in. What model is this?"
"idk"
"Cool, thanks!"

I've had the GuitarHeads MegaMetal pickups before, they actually make a really good hybrid coupled with a GFS '59.

Gonna have pics/re-build thread(s)?

I'll probably take some more pics once I get some of them done. I sliced the dickens out of my thumb yesterday so I won't be working on any for a few days.

Looking closely, the pickup cavity is a hair smaller than standard, so you'd have to dremel out the ends for the "ears" on regular pickups. They do look bigger than standard though, which would throw people off at first glance.

Are you trying to temp me into another trade?

Not yet. I have to see what guitar an "Ibanez X Series" I just ordered ends up being. I got the ART and Iceman versions now, hoping for the Destroyer to round out the set. ;)

Oooh, that Ibanez idk (ARC100) showed up today and has Gotoh tuners installed. Won't have to swap those out. :D The line across the switch at the bottom is a finish crack though, not a reflection. I may have to refinish that one just because.
