Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

Man I hope Christian doesn't think I am copying him!!! I saw this and had to have it. It is supposed to work beautifully and 100% the way it should! It is just ugly. I am thinking of possibly making a new box for it or at the very least retolex it and put a handle on it. We'll see though. I am stoked. I haven't had a project since the Vibrolux.

Do those have a tape drive in them?

I think it would be fun to go all out with the retro thing. Make it look like something out of Flash Gordon. But that's just me...

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

Greg...don't you dare touch that cosmetically. it is literally dripping mojo.

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

^^^LOL!!! We'll see what it looks like when it gets here. To be honest I may just do this as an investment. Buy it cheap fix it up a little and sell it for twice what I have in it.

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

The express route to Regret would involve you changing anything on that not related to getting it working in a manner it was intended to.

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

So what does it do for us old gear novices? Delay?

Yah.

It's an Echoplex, tape-loop delay. There's a cassette inside (not a "regular" one) that's looped... no start or end point and the delay time changes as the tape speed and/or head location changes.

State of the art circa 1972.

Bender ~ Is that solid state echoplex?

It's not really that much like a cassette, but that will get the point across, and FWIW, the tape speed doesn't change...the record head moves which sets the delay time (20 to 650 ms), and yes, that one is solid state.

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

Yeah, just get it working perfect, if it's not already. Take it apart and detail clean it.

I saw this tele on Ebay tonight, and wondered how gay I'd look if I bought the same guitar you have! ROFL

Re: Picked up an old fixer-upper today!!

Another +1 to leaving it alone, cosmetically !

The latch looks great & the inside looks very well kept.

Other than a proper handle, I'd leave it be. :bigok:

I want a Binson...No tape to break. Mechanically superior...except for the italiain wiring...thats prolly all rotted by now...

Yeah, it's not exactly like a cassette but I couldn't think of another way to easily explain it.

I know a guy who owns three tube Echoplexes & they have variable tape speed. Modded I guess? He had them all rebuilt/restored several years ago.

I've only really been exposed to his arsenal... For the most part the only other 'plexes I've come across have been run into ground.
