Pickguard sizing question

I'm rebuilding a late 80's Korean made Squier and ordered a "Fender" pickguard off ebay to fit my new HSS pickup config. The fit is close but off; the cutout for neck is too narrow (my neck is about 1/4" wider) and all the mounting holes are in the wrong place.

I could probably make it work but I'd have to grind down where it slides around the neck and re-drill for all the mounting holes. No big deal but I'd like to avoid this if I can. At least the thing was dirt cheap.

Question to the board, is my guitar so old (or so Korean) that a modern Fender pickguard replica isn't a sure fit? Or did I just get a bum pickguard?

yeah there are variaitons. I just got one for my tele and from t he manufatcurer and I had to modifiy it with a hack saw to fit the bridge properly

I have had to do this....Slightly sand or dremel tool the correct neck width...Pre-drill your new holes before screwing in the screws to the body...Once the old holes are covered, you're golden..Biggest issue with me,is that the strings lineup right over the pickup poles or screws...

Use a piece of masking tape as a guide to getting a straight line in the area where you need to widen the guard..Remove material until you get to that masking tape line..Don't remove too much though!

Crap!

I was hoping for the easy way out.

As an aisde, I had a wild hair initially about cutting a custom pickguard out of some wood off my own property but opted for EASY... let's just say I may revisit the hard way...

Just take your time....You could also trace your current pickguard but add the changes you want to it...Then have a place like www.wdmusic.com make you another guard where all of your holes line up and the neck width is the same etc..I've bought quite a few guards from WD Music over the years, though there are quite a few places doing custom guards these days also...
