So I just got a Schecter Omen 7 ridiculously cheap. I would consider leaving the stock pickups in, cause they don't sound bad, but they aren't 4-conductor wiring and I really like coil-splitting, series/parallel wiring, phase switching, etc. So I might as well put some new ones in.
The guitar's relevant specs are:
Basswood body
Maple neck
Rosewood fretboard
26.5" scale
Fixed bridge (TOM and string thru saddles)
I'd love to have a good metal tone that sounds unconventional; the super-saturated lead tones and super-tight rhythm stuff is all well and good, but given the choice between interesting tone and perfect tone, I'll always go with interesting, and for metal, I'll go with aggressive tone over articulate tone. I like other genres, all the way to blues and jazz, so I'd like for them to sound good clean too (though I know coil-splitting may help with that). I'm playing through a Fender Mustang III V.2 modeling amp. (I realize that isn't the greatest metal tone, but I'm a college student with limited funds and I chose versatility over high-end quality. Also the amp is very tweakable, so that helps.)
Right now I'm thinking about the Schecter Apocalypse, Schecter Pasadena, and Duncan Black Winter for the neck pickup, and Schecter Apocalypse, Schecter Brimstone, and Nazgul for the bridge. Unfortunately I've yet to try a guitar with any of these installed.
What do you think of what I have in mind so far? Has anyone tried the current Schecter USA pickups? Am I overthinking this/should I just focus more on the amp? Are there other pickups that I haven't considered that you'd suggest?
One last note: If I ever tune this guitar below standard, it won't be far.
