"Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

I am generally a proponent of theories that involve a good chunk of influence from mechanical effects on pickup sounds (as in from loose things, mounts etc).

However, I compared (as in recorded) too many pieces of the same pickup at different ages to believe in break-in.

Even the naturally appearing light degaussing is difficult to hear and doesn't change character.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

I do remember a story about Andy Summers degaussing the magnets in the pickups in his tele by leaving it leaning against a water tank in Boston Garden. Other than that, I don't think a pickup is just going to wear out over the course of it's lifetime.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

Wow, I'm sad I wasn't here earlier...
Custom Shop masterbuilt Fender = the MIM Fenders?...
. I doubt he's played either, let alone both side by side. I mean damn, I can tell the difference between the 2 both blind and deaf.

Yeah, I don't know how this MIM vs. Master Built comparison keeps coming up. To anyone who has ever played a MIM and then played something like a custom shop, master built or most MIA guitars there is a difference. That being said, there is a big difference between a MIM and a master built. It's like comparing a Kia to a Viper.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

Imagine, if you will, that you have just replaced a pickup on your guitar. Likely as not, you have also changed strings. By any chance, is the "settling in period" about the same as the time that it takes for the newness to wear off the strings?

This.

Although I think it is possible to mildly degauss your magnets through playing- here's my suggestion for menga on how he could prove it conclusively to us all:
1) First of all, a regular gaussmeter won't be precise enough, so you'd do best to take the before-and-after readings using a hospital MRI machine.
2) String your guitar with extra heavy strings made of pure magnetite (and for Heaven's sake don't forget to make sure all your control knobs are old growth hardwood).
3) Choose a place where the ley lines cross and naturally amplify orgone energy and cosmic rays, like the center of Stonehenge or that spot twenty feet above the top of the Great Pyramid.
4) Carefully align your instrument perpendicular to magnetic North and be sure to hold it perfectly motionless within the Earth's field while you play.
5) Play heavy power chords 24 hours a day for six hundred and sixty six days, six hours, six minutes and seventeen seconds.
6) Be sure to report your test results here on the forum after you have measured them.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

It takes many, many years to degauss a pickup. Many of the one's I've seen getting re-magnetized in the Custom Shop are ancient relics from the '50s and '60s.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

Teh subject, don't change it. How ARE masterbuilt models the same as MIM ones?

They're both the same assembly line guitar made of the same cheapest, easily obtained hardwoods Leo Fender could obtain. There is no magic, no voodoo. It's a utilitarian design made for working musicians. There is no justification for a $3,000 mark up because a luthier hand filed the frets and signed the back of the headstock. But it's sure impressive hanging on the wall of the man cave. Do you guys frame the receipt?

Leo Fender is dead. The company Fender was in the 50s and 80s has changed in various ways. As one of the biggest musical instrument companies in the world, FMIC has the means and the money to access varied-quality woods, to outsource hardware from quality factories, and to buy machines and tools to build guitars of various quality.

There's so much bull**** in your post you could fertilize an entire field.

If only there weren't dozens upon dozens of videos and hundreds, if not thousands, of photos proving that wrong...

Unfortunately for you we are well aware of the workings of the fender factory and just what goes on inside there. Many of us also make our own instruments from scratch, so are well aware of the time and effort it takes to get things 'just right'.
Maybe you should confine these sort of posts to Harmony Central, where your bluster might be believed rather than looked on with pitying sadness.

I guess that means an 80's vette and a brand new C7 stingray are the same to... both are made on assembly lines, both were made by Chevy in the same plant in Kentucky, both have 4 wheels, both are covettes...

the difference is the attention to detail, the refined techniques, the finish work, the quality of the electronics, the choice selection of woods... and the fact that they are crafted by the finest luthiers fender has to offer...If you don't think a masterbuilt strat is worth the money than feel free to think that way. Many people agree that they are over priced. But to say a MIM and a masterbuilt strat are the same is complete nonsense...

I tried all this stuff and I still can't hear a difference. Probably because I'm deaf as a post... :p

No, even at HC we knew that was total BS.

Yes, I'm a long time member of what was once HC and is now a graveyard.

You don't know?

HC management ran it into the ground by "upgrading" the forum with completely inappropriate forum software packages three times. It was so unworkable that everybody left.

Re: "Pickup Break-in" Any truth here??

I never joined HC but used to browse it often for gear reviews and technical info. At some point I noticed that search engine hits stopped taking me anywhere useful and then I just gave up on them.
