Pickup Combo for metal.......

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

I had a Dimebucker. Sounded horrible. Metered out pretty high, so I doubt it had a broken/bad coil. It sounded like a single coil on crack with tourette's syndrome

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

I second playing with the amp settings.

Try to get the sound more from your playing (more agressive and stronger attack picking) than from the amp

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

One of my friends has a couple of Dimebuckers in his guitars. They've always struck me as reasonably similar to Distortions (despite all the hating), and my friend manages to get some very good (very modern) metal tones with them through his POD. I can see that they might be a bit bright or fizzy through some rigs (especially those with limited EQs), but you should be able to chug through the Spider.

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

Anything can chug through a Spider. You can plug a 3/4 scale Squier Strat made for 4-year-olds into a Spider and play "Raining Blood" no problem.

The "insane" setting has way way way way way too much gain to ever sound good for anything but solos but it's what 90% of kids leave that amp on for all of their rhythm tone too.

It's a great amp, but i think it sounds heavier either on "Crunch" with the gain up pretty high or on "metal" with the gain down pretty low.

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

Did Dime use the BLUSA one or the Bill & Becky one? - I've never been clear on that.

From what I can gather he used ones that came from Stewmac, which were BL USA ones.
There's plenty stuff out there about it, more crap than I'd ever care to get into.
I have a BL USA one, bought it cos it was cheap, thought I'd give it a try, and it's awesome. Certainly does everything I'd expect from a pup Dime might have used.

Bill & Becky....if I remember all the stuff from back then, it was an L500XL, but I think he had a rewind here and there so it may not have been completely stock, but never too far from the original. The Dimebucker was what Darrel wanted at the time of its inception (which would work pretty well through a Krank circuit).

I don't think there is any "road" here....pretty common knowledge, aside from petty details and rumors.

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

Ok..well back to my original question...........IF I PUT A DIMEBUCKER IN THE NECK, AND AN X2N IN THE BRIDGE....WOULD IT SOUND CRAZY OR WHAT??!!!! Better yet....can a Dimebucker be used in the Neck position???

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

What kind of sound do you think i would get from a setup lke that? The 2 pickups feed off each other right?

Well, rather than shouting, you could follow my advice and search for the thread I mentioned where someone tried a Dime in the neck.

yes they feed off of each other until eventually they both disappear hehehe ;)

sorry...

not sure what you mean, but generally I'd have to say no they don't "feed off of each other." In most set ups, you can play with the bridge pickup, the neck pickup, or both in parallel.

If you want to try the Dimebucker in the neck position then try it. Worst that will happen is it will sound bad. Put it in and lower it some and try it out. Then report back.

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

+1
that too, or a high output pedal

No, a pedal just puts a band aid on the amp problem. If you need a pedal, you dotn have the right amp to start with.

Re: Pickup Combo for metal.......

howbout BAREKNUCKLES WARPIG PUPS? I heard they are good too.

Unless you live in the UK, Bareknuckles will be pretty expensive. I think you should mess around with your amp settings more before you go spending big on pickups, especially since you really should already be able to get good chug tones with what you have.

Also, if you think the Dime is muddy, then Warpigs aren't for you, either. They're awesome, and I wouldn't call them muddy, but they're bassier than Dimes (which I definitely wouldn't call muddy... but your tastes are obviously different ;))

On a side note, you said the Dime isn't that hot. Are you sure you don't have a wiring problem? I had a partial short to earth once that made a pickup sound pretty wimpy (but not wimpy enough that it was obvious to someone who wasn't familiar with the pickup that it was a fault)

We did answer you. None of us think it will sound crazy. I think it will sound like more gain in a situation where you're using too much gain.

Trust your ears, man, and pay attention to those of us who have been there and done that.

The best-sounding heavy tones are the ones that get as fat and heavy as possible with as little gain as possible.
