Pickup covers?

Re: Pickup covers?

I noticed slight differences in a covered vs. non-covered JB. The cover took some of the top end off of the tone, calmed that shrill mid-range spike everyone hates. I like a covered JB more.

I have a covered DD in my Standard and it seems to have mellowed that a bit too. It's still nice and cruchy under gain though.

How does that covered PG neck sound?

Re: Pickup covers?

I think the biggest difference in tone between covered and non-covered comes from the distance the pickup sits from the strings. You can get the coils of a non-covered pickup closer to the strings than those of a covered pickup. IMO, this accounts for the majority of tonal differences people hear.

Covers MAY cause a slight reduction in highs, but the quality of the nickel covers Duncan uses makes that a very minor consideration.

what would happen if you were to ground the pickup cover?

The pickup cover is grounded through the attachment of the baseplate...The cover is soldered at the baseplate...

I agree with you Jeff and a very valid point also.

It's great! I can see (hear) why it's a favorite. The PGn is very crisp for being neck pickup, and I like that. It's very defined and even throughout all the strings, no spikes, no woofing....a very sweet tone. I think it's a good compliment for the DD in a high-gain setup...if you don't mind switching pickups for your cleans.
