PickUp Dave Murray

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

just go with the classic black strat setup!!! I'd go with SuperD bridge and PAF neck. If Dave's tone is exactly what you want.

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Sorry but the PAF is a humbucker... And it's not good for a strat like mine!
So, forget for a moment Dave Murray, FORGET HIM!
I want a complete guitar, with a little sound of dave but good for arpeggioes like the slash's, or metallica... Now, i want a look with rails like the SHR or CHR or Super Distortion S DP218!

Can I make these combos?
If yes chose only one of these:

1- Seymour Duncan SHR-1b, SVR-1n, SCR-1n
2- Seymour Duncan SHR-1b, SCR-1n, SCR-1n
3- DiMarzio Super Distortion S DP218 (bridge), Seymour Duncan SCR-1n, SHR-1b
4- DiMarzio Super Distortion S DP218 (bridge), Fender Texas Special, Fender Texas Special
5- DiMarzio Super Distortion S DP218 (bridge), Fender Texas Special, Fender Standard Usa

Thank for posts!

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Hmmm, speaking of dave murray, metallica and Slash in one guitar , it would have to be the ultimate axe.
You have to choose.

If you want ROCK, then you have plenty to choose from from either Duncan, or Dimarzio. If you like Dave, try the Super Dist Humbucker from Dimarzio for Bridge will do it.
If you like Slash , the 59/Alnico 2 pro will do it
IF you like metallica.... try EMG81, an Invader

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Ok, I decided for the Super Distortion S for bridge.
A SHR-1n is good in the neck with the superdistortion in the bridge?

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Can I ask, have you bought the Strat or are you GOING to buy the Strat?

Because, it seems to me it would be better if you got a Strat that has a humbucker at the bridge and go from there...

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

I'm GOING... Maybe I'll make the combo SHR SVR & SCR in the new fender strat and the super distort with paf in my yamaha rgx 520 fz (it has two hambuckers), i will change mechanics too...

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Then why not get a Strat that has two single coils at the neck and middle and a humbucker at the bridge, put the Super Distortion at the bridge and whatever you want at the neck.

I think this might work a lot better...

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

But super distortion s dp218 is a single coil... See that here www.dimarzio.com , pickups, super distortion s DP218...

And a question: you think that the Hot rails can be good in the neck position?

>Pickups>Humbucker>High Output>Super Distortion

And, the Hot Rails is used in neck, tone is subjective (and high output)
For Dave Murray, just get a 2-bucker strat and install SuperD/PAF combo.
That's the only option for classic Dave.

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Don't do the Cool Rails in the neck. I've got one, and I find it inadequate for Murray tones... especially if you've got a brighter humbucker in the bridge (I've got the DD).

I'd go for HR(n) / mid / Super Dist.

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Hmm

Well, personally I think Dave's tone is horrid and has been for 15 years. I think it's a combo of things: the darker soudning Hot Rails/CC.. newer high gain compressed and dark sounding Marshall preamps and then DSLs, and an over reliance on effects/racks. :earl:

His old rig was a few great stompers, the wah, old Metalfaces modded by cornish, and his vintage bridge and Kahler strats always sounded better to me.

(I dont care much for Adrian's newer tones either...again, too many effects and dark/compressed newer Marshalls)

All opinions aside..if you want the "new" Dave Murray sound go HR bridge and neck. I'd prolly go with a CR in the middle (though basically Dave never used the middle pup in Maiden's heyday)

For classic Dave Murray, SuperD and PAF is the only way to go.

And FWIW, single size buckers dont sound as "big" as thier full size counterparts.

Just to eliminate any confusion, the Super Distortion comes in the full-size version AND a single-coil size version.

Ultimately, it's your decision on which way you want to go.

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Just to clarify:
Super Distortion: Perhaps the best known DiMarzio pickup (aka DiMarzio's JB, not in tone but popularity ;))
Super Distortion S: DiMarzio's take of the afore mentioned Super Distortion in single coil size. I hear it sounds pretty close but not quite the same simply because like JeffB said:
...single size buckers don't sound as "big" as their full size counterparts.

EDIT: Doh, beat to the punch! :p

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

First of all: Thanks to all for reply me and for advise me...
Second: I watched some Fender with hambukers, I'm interested for the Fender American Stratocaster HSS.
So, I can put there the Super Distortion in the hambucker.
In the middle and the neck position there are 2 Custom-Staggered Tex-Mex, what is your advice for that guitar? Do I change the middle and neck pickups (maybe texas special both), or I leave that?

welp that is exactly Adrian Smith' setup in his custom strats: Super Distortion and 2 Texas specials (though he has a Floyd Rose bridge). EDIT: whoops..his are TX SPECIALS, not tex-MEX

And here's a couple of clips of just Adrian playing with that setup

TX Specials in Action

and

Super Distortion

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Are you sure those are TX Specials, Jeff? The poles are flat in that clip and TX Specials have staggered poles.

No..in that IDK whats in THAT guitar. But his custom strats are supposed to have TX specials in them according to an interview he did...so thats an assumption on my part they are TX specials based on thats what he said he uses.

regardless, I'm glad to see him playing his SG most of the time these days :approve:

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

What's scary is I have the stuff to make an Adrian Smith type Strat. It would mean swapping some parts between my 3 Strats but it'd work. Not gonna do it though...LOL.

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

get a fat strat. or a double fat strat. pimp it with full size humbuckers. be done with it

Re: PickUp Dave Murray

Well, thank you to everybody, I realized a lot of think with this thread!
Results:

Dave Murray's PickUp:
Classic: 2 hambuckers: Dimarzio Super Distort in the Bridge and Dimarzio PAF in the Neck
Modern: 3 single coils, Seymour Duncan SHR-1 for all or SHR-1b in the Bridge and 2 SCR-1n in the Middle and Neck position.

My choses:
New Fender Strat Usa HSS, Sunburst Marple (like the Adrian's one). Pickups: Dimarzio Super Distortion in the Bridge position, Fender Texas Special for the single coils: Middle and Neck. Floyd Roses PRO Bridge/Tremolo and Ernie Ball 0.009 - 0.042 for stings. White or Black Pearl Pickguard...

In my Yamaha RGX 520 FZ, I will customize this guitar with Super Distortion Hambucker in the Bridge and a PAF hambucker in the Neck; new tuners and maybe new bridge. Stringe Ernie Ball .009-.042

In a remote Future can exist another Fender Strat Standard or Deluxe Sunburst Rosewood, with 3 hot rails or 1 hot and 2 cool... Floyd Rose for sure! And white pearl pick guard!

Thank to all!!!
