Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Peavey Classic 30? Great amp, but not metal. I'd get an awesome Distortion box before a new pickup.

By the way - that JB8 is like halfway between a DD and a SD…think about it.

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

In responding to darth , I was describing that mostly metal Hair bands used JB pickups .
I did'nt say metall bands in the 80's did'nt use them , i've even seen some do it with 59's if the amps are hot enough .

My reply was that more than just hair metalers used the JB. Your post insinuated that the JB wasnt good for a tighter high gain sound... I present "all caught in a mosh" as evidence that the JB can do a tight high gain sound also.

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Sure the JB and the DD can do metal, but they don't have the dark, smooth highs the OP is looking for. You should check out the Dimarzio Super Distortion or the Tone Zone. a lot of Dimarzios have that cocked wah midrange sound more than duncans, and i think you'd be happier with one of those.

No, no no, definitely NOT the Tone Zone if you're looking for "smooth" highs.

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Well, it's not shrill in the sense that a JB or a DD would, but IMO, it's not smooth. Then again, my picking technique tends to generate bright sounds.

You are correct , the JB CAN do high gain metal if your amp/speaker is setup for it .
It's no different than George Lynch using a DD for "Under Lock And Key" and that does'nt sound metal , but damn straight it's 80's hair band material , lol.
I just think the Custom or DD would have a much tighter low end tone For Metal and a JB would be better or high gain tones with a strong midrange push with a looser low end that most 80's hair bands crave for.

the tone zone definitely has enough high end to cut through, but to me it's defining characteristic is its really pronounced low mids. It's not santana smooth, but it's top end is less pronounced/"smoother" than the JB or the DD

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Love it, or Hate it . . . the JB IS the 70's/80's metal pick up !

So was the Custom and DD to many artist !
The only reason the JB was the most popular pickup in the 80's was because it was marketed that way to everyone from players to guitar companies .
As a guitar builder it was almost a sin not to put the JB/Jazz or JB/59 combo in the super strats or LP's during the 80's if you wanted to be taken serious as a builder for the 80's players..

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Lolz... this is an actual debate?

If you want something that will do it all, get the CS' 78 Model. It will cover every 80's tone.

I'm getting a Warren DiMartini tone with a '78 in this video... all I had to do was roll the tone knob down a bit.

Warren D's tone and EVH's tone are quite a bit different but the '78 is in the sweet spot where it can reach every tone of the 70's and 80's.

While I agree with this... to me being the tone zone didnt come out until the 90's... its not much of an 80's pickup... it can cop those tons though if you want it to.

hmmm...good point.

i don't know. the thread seems to be going in 2 directions. Yes, the JB is in many ways the quintessential 80s metal pickup. BUT for what the OP is asking for, the Super Distortion is the way to go.

Thank you so much EC. You're right to ask about the rig, that's my old crappy Line 6 set-up... I cringe a bit when I hear how hollow and Rockman sounding it sounds.

I'm using either a Kemper PFA and or a 2 mic set-up on a master volume tube amp now... using a Lehle splitter and recording with both is the holy grail for me.

Wish I could go back and re-do everything with a better rig, but it's just not possible. : (

I think you were one of the members here that coerced me into checking out real amps and real microphones... I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH for that! You RULE!!!!

Nice video! I'm definitely not a metal guy, but that was great!

And you stole my answer, I was going to suggest the '78 as well.

Never talk dirty about the Line-6 ever again!!! Those are fighting words!

All joking aside. Nice vid. I love bean boxes.

Yeah the thread has gone a bit schizophrenic hasnt it...

As far as what i would recommend I would go more off his amp than anything else. My last Classic 30 died if i remember right in 1998 so maybe my memory isnt the sharpest on how it reacted to all pickups i tried but I do remember this. It was a beyotch to get a good metal tone out of... I could get hard rock for days but the bottom just didnt like to chug. (Which at the time was ok cause I was doing a classic rock cover band sort of thing with it) My first recommend would actualy be a speaker upgrade. I used a V30 in mine. At the time I was playing a pair of Ibanez RG750's with Tone zones in the bridge which didnt work. Lots of lows and low mids move the amp in the wrong way it makes the bass loose and flubby. My suggestion would actually be to use Dimarzio Breeds. When I moved from the TZ to the breeds it opened the amp up and made it sound less congested. Hitting the preamp hard in the C30 made it compress too much.

God I hated that amp though... I know tons of guys love it but i just couldnt get a long with it. Funny enough I kept it cause I didnt like it, at the time we were the house band in this dive bar in bums buck idaho and we kept our gear stored in the back room. I bought the C30 as an amp that I wouldnt care if it got stolen... Actually had 3 of them 2 were replaced under warranty I ran the 3rd until board warped from heat and it started to have really strange drifting and hum issues.

Re: Pickup for 70's/80's metal tones.

Super D. If you want warmer, then a C8. I personally feel you need a thicker pickup if you are using a single 12" speaker.
