In responding to darth , I was describing that mostly metal Hair bands used JB pickups .
I did'nt say metall bands in the 80's did'nt use them , i've even seen some do it with 59's if the amps are hot enough .
My reply was that more than just hair metalers used the JB. Your post insinuated that the JB wasnt good for a tighter high gain sound... I present "all caught in a mosh" as evidence that the JB can do a tight high gain sound also.
Sure the JB and the DD can do metal, but they don't have the dark, smooth highs the OP is looking for. You should check out the Dimarzio Super Distortion or the Tone Zone. a lot of Dimarzios have that cocked wah midrange sound more than duncans, and i think you'd be happier with one of those.
No, no no, definitely NOT the Tone Zone if you're looking for "smooth" highs.

Love it, or Hate it . . . the JB IS the 70's/80's metal pick up !
the tone zone definitely has enough high end to cut through, but to me it's defining characteristic is its really pronounced low mids. It's not santana smooth, but it's top end is less pronounced/"smoother" than the JB or the DD
Lolz... this is an actual debate?
If you want something that will do it all, get the CS' 78 Model. It will cover every 80's tone.
I'm getting a Warren DiMartini tone with a '78 in this video... all I had to do was roll the tone knob down a bit.
Warren D's tone and EVH's tone are quite a bit different but the '78 is in the sweet spot where it can reach every tone of the 70's and 80's.
While I agree with this... to me being the tone zone didnt come out until the 90's... its not much of an 80's pickup... it can cop those tons though if you want it to.
Nice demo.. whats the rest of the rig your using there?

Thank you so much EC. You're right to ask about the rig, that's my old crappy Line 6 set-up... I cringe a bit when I hear how hollow and Rockman sounding it sounds.
hmmm...good point.
i don't know. the thread seems to be going in 2 directions. Yes, the JB is in many ways the quintessential 80s metal pickup. BUT for what the OP is asking for, the Super Distortion is the way to go.
