Pickup for high gain.....

Raging BB Gunologist
Lately, my tone is shifting from punk to metal. With these new settings (and higher gain) I'm finding the JB in the bridge of my Strat (drop C) is giving me too much bass and farting out when palm muting.

I'm looking at something with less output (let the amp do the work, vice the pickup), and less bass to run into my Recto. I'm thinking of either Pearly Gates or Seth Lovers.

Anyone with a Recto try these? What'd you think of them?

Any other suggestions?

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

you should try CC.
i have it tuned in D and it rules.
hehehehe i can send a soundclip to you via email if you want
or via MSN
i play metal
but i do not have RECTO.

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

You should really get an SG-13.
that thing is built for down tuning.

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

Two suggestions? Geez, I thought you guys fancied yourselves pickup experts? :)

Either way, what's been suggested so far on other forums;

- Alnico 5 and/or ceramic mag pickups (more punch and pop for heavy palm mutes)
- Duncan Distortion (good for what I'm after, but may be too compressed when combined with a Recto)
- Duncan Custom Custom
- Dimebucker (very aggressive, percussive, and tilted towards the high end of the freq range)
- Rio Grande BBQ (dark sounding)
- Rio Grande Genuine Texas
- EMG 81
- DiMarzio Fred (kinda like a JB with less mids and crispier chording)
- DiMarzio PAF
- Gibson Iommi (kinda like a Duncan Distortion, but more bass and less compression)
- Duncan Custom Shop EVH (I was told it's a cross between a Pearly Gates and Custom-Custom)
- Duncan Custom Shop wax potted Antiquity with a few winds added for more output.
- Bill Lawrence - L-500XL (kinda like a Dimebucker, but not as beastly)

Any thoughts on any of these?

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

1 - Dimebucker, 2 - Custom Custom, 3 - Bill lawrence l 500 XL, 4 - Dimarzio PAF PRO.

I guess a bill lawrence or a dimebucker will do the job. if the D tuning is the case and that fender guitar too.
ehehehehe
check out my email.

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

Here are my ideas, Seymour duncan full shred, Bill Lawrence Xl-500. I would think these would work very well because they are all are more on the trebly side and the notes do not get all mudded together with detuning. Maybe a Duncan Screaming Demon would work also?

Thanks, I'll look into those too. :)

Re: Pickup for high gain.....

Any thoughts on the Tom Anderson H2 and H3?

Someone just told me that the H3's are what Mesa use when testing their amps. Can anyone confirm that?
