Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

Hi

I'm in the process of designing and building a Precision Bass from Warmoth parts. My musical style is rock and blues as ZZ Top, Lynard Skynard and SRV.
My amp is the Ampeg SVT-CL with 810E Cab.

Specifications for the bass:

'55 tele bass or standard P-Bass. (Depending on pickup)
Swamp Ash body
Maple neck with maple fingerboard
Passive electronics

I like the looks of the 55 Tele bass, but is not sure how much the missing hum cancelling of the pick-ups is gonna be a problem?

For both type of basses there are the "vintage", "hot" and "quarter-pounder" versions of the pickups.
As I read the Duncan website all models might fit my needs, so what is it gonna be????

Help is highly appreciated

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

welcome to the forum!!

oh boy is there a cool pup for you.

get yourself a quarter-pound single coil p bass stack. its a custom shop pup so its gonna be more than a stock duncan, but its worth it. you have a great amp and a cool idea for a bass so look into this pup cause the tone is too much fun. i put one in a real 55 and it was wonderful!! looks sweet too.

its a little taller than a real single coil p bass pup so if youre having the body made for you have them rout that a little deeper.

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

Hi, Thanks for the advice

Im also interested to know how big the problem with noise of a standard single coil pickup is gonna be???

How much of a tonal difference will there be between the "hot" and "quarter-pound" pickups???

Thanks in advance

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

the difference between the qp and hot is that the qp seems to have more mids and maybe a little more bite. the hot seems a little rounder. output is fairly similar.

as far as noise, its like any other single coil. in some rooms it isnt a problem, in rooms with lots of neon, flourecents, or screens it can be a real problem

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

I have done a couple swamp ash maple/maple Warmoths with standard P pickups. In both cases I started with a QP but ended up putting a Hot in to give them more low end.

I attribute this to the extra stiffness of the steel reinforced Warmoth neck along with the Maple fingerboard retaining more upper mids and high end. The QP sounded punchy but thin in these basses while the Hot was much better with more low end and warmth.

If you decide to go single coil and are worried about noise then go with the stacked custom shop version. It's voiced much like the Hot but with dual coils for hum cancelling.

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

i play quarter pounders, i had a hot for a while but was even less what i needed after thinkin the quarter pounder wasnt bright enough.

i like the quarter pounder cos its all round, bright and deep aswell as hum cancelling, and unlike the hot which is bassy and middy has the character for my style of music, i play a svt4pro and a 810e and i have found squiers with the stocks can sound as good as me fenders (with eq alterations).

i owuld love a 51 p bass tho, i only ever played one and it was sweet, i dunno about the pickups tho, make sure u get as much info off everyone as possible!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for your advice - How would you rate the general quality of the Warmoth Parts?

I'm planning for a P-bass almost identical to the Fender Custom Shop 55 P-Bass using the best possible parts available - do you have any suggestions or advices for me, before i start my project?

Re: Pickup for Warmoth P-Bass?????

Does anyone have experience with with the Rio Grande Myu Grande for '51 P-Bass, or any other Rio Grande pickups?

I read somewhere on the internet that Dusty Hill is using these in his Custom axes.

Thanks in advance
