Pickup GAS 2025

BTW, gonna go see him live (again) next week.
Lucky you. I bought tickets for its 2020 show at Montreal Jazz Festival but it was cancelled due to pandemic. They rescheduled for 2022 but I was 1000km away on my bicycle.

Also I forgot I really want to try a DMZ Al DiMeola set
You beat me on that one!

I also want to try:
EMG Radioactive Super 77 bridge (I already have Fat 55 set, so it will do a Hot 70 set)

If it fails:
Dimarzio Super Distortion + Paf Pro
Seymour Duncan Custom Custom + Slash 2.0 neck

And finally for my LP:
Seymour Duncan Haydes Gates set

That's where the PATB-3 comes in. I'm not crazy about Blues Saraceno, but I love his pup.

Wanting to try a PATB-3 because it supposed to make a trem equipped guitar closer to an LP but I don't hear it in YT videos I watched. I don't hear the mids, and the highs are a little too much and not fat enough (only from videos though). I don't want to sound identical to an LP, as I already have an LP, but I want to get closer to that sound out of my Ibanez SZ520.

Honestly, it's kind of like a cross between a JB and a Custom/'59 hybrid in some ways. Similar output to a JB, but with a tighter bottom end response, more balanced mids, and a little top end sparkle, much like the hybrid. Really natural sound when driven and great harmonic character like both of those pickups, as well.
That actually sounds kinda interesting. Just as long as it resembles the JB more than it does the Custom. I tried so hard to like the Custom and Custom 5, but pickups like that just don't work for me.

The PATB-1 comes across more "JB" than Custom to me, but it's definitely its own thing.

What didn't you like about the Custom/Custom 5?

The low-end.

I liked the Custom better than the Custom 5. I liked the more aggressive high-end. But I found both's low end hard to control through my setup. Too thuddy!

I didn't hate either. Given the right setup, I bet they sound killer. It's just I'm more used to the JB/Distortion/Black Winter side of things.

See I don't like the JB (or its variations) at all, but I like the Custom 5. But I don't use a ton of gain, either.

His signature set is pretty bright, but honestly, Al's tone is mostly in his technique. Even on his LP with Super Distortions, it doesn't sound like a typical LP/Super Distortion sound. BTW, gonna go see him live (again) next week.

"Bright" would be the last thing i can say about his signature pickups, if you mean Dp201 & DP202, because i have no idea what he used to use on his sig. PRS Prism guitar. Warm yet clear, yes, that's how they wound to me. DP201, with its 4,87H inductance and >10,5K DCR, warmer than many Duncans like '59 or Jazz. On the other hand DP202 is once identified as "Tone Zone Jr" by Frank Falbo. So it's not bright, either :)

Yeah, each to his own. I did not hate the Custom. I just found the thuddy low-end kinda hard to dial out. People often say the JB is "loose", but, while it certainly is not as immediate as a Black Winter, I've never found it hard to get t3h chuggz going with it. I find the Custom harder to dial in nice and focused, but I admit the whole smiley EQ curve is not something I'm accustomed to (pun intended, LOL) with on high(ish) output pickups. I did like the Custom's high-end, though. Maybe someday I'll custom order something like a tighter Custom with less low-end.

Do you think it is because of the way it looks?

There's likely some truth to that. Years ago I bought a secondhand CS pickup that is the PATB-3 wind on standard trembucker bobbins. I absolutely love the pickup, and have often wondered how it compares to a PATB-3, but I won't deny that the PATB aesthetic would bother me in my LP.

On the other hand, the Crazy 8 looks great paired with an old CRn in a strat.

Al's PRS Prisms had the 57/08 humbuckers, about 8.5k bridge 8.0k neck and Alnico II magnets.

My new guitar sounds awesome. Let's just say I am curious.

Do you know which pickups are in it? They look like the Schecter Apocalypse pickups, which I haven't tried but heard good things about. At least your guitar is routed for regular pickups instead of the EMG-sized soapbars. Options for those are really limited. So much so that I've had to dismantle a few pickups and put them in the Duncan housing with the flat Duncan baseplate just to swap them into my Schecter 7, and took a drill and chisel to my Epiphone 7 to fit a ring at the bridge.

They are the Schecter Heretic same pickups as the Apocalypse just wound overseas 10k ohms neck and 14.5 kohm bridge. From what I have read Schecter speced them like the Bareknuckles Aftermath set.

I'd be interested to hear them. We should have a 7 string powwow sometime.

I've been super-curious about these Schecter pickups for a long time, so I appreciate this info.

On a general note, I'm not really gassing (passing?) for pickups these days myself. I like what I have in all my guitars. Next purchase will probably be another amp and likely a semihollow, but those are years away from a budget standpoint.
