Pickup ideas? 3 humbuckers

Re: Pickup ideas? 3 humbuckers

The Dimebucker might be a little too cutting for cleaner styles. I'd opt for something with less output that lets you explore dynamics more. If it really is going to be for things like blues and country, then a 59 with a 59/Custom Hybrid (with a split switch) will give you a really versatile setup as well. Great for blues, and split, good for country, too

I humbly disagree...very much disagree. The Dimebucker reacts beautifully with the Volume knob and less output does not equal more dynamics.

Yes there are tons of options the OP could try, I just feel its a disservice to say the Dimebucker is too high output, too cutting, and not dynamic.

The dimebucker is great if you're okay with a VERY high output and VERY bright bridge bucker. Personally, I'd veer more towards an invader, X2N, or one of the other high output pickups just because my rig doesn't tolerate that level of brightness from a pickup. Black Winter, Pegasus, Distortion and Parallel Axis Distortion are all great high output bridge options, each with a different twist (although there's nothing wrong if you want the dimebucker). Dimarzio also has a ton of high output bridge options, but that's just worth looking at if you have something specific in mind.

Interesting. I don't hear it that way. To me it compresses everything, and I can't get anything resembling a good clean sound out of it.

Just a quick update. Guitar's body should be fixed and remarked to neck with most hardware installed on Tuesday. Haven't quite decided on pickups yet. The shop says they have some used SD''s around the shop for me to check out.

with regard to the Lawrence L500 series, I can agree that they are known for being used across many genres. they don't give you a Nuno or a Dime tone, rather than that's what those artists did with it - remember that amps and playing style factor in as well. it's a fairly balanced voice and considered by many to be pretty transparent, which is what can help it transcend so many styles. but I haven't played the Dimebucker, so I can't speak to it.

personally, I tend to prefer a bridge-voiced pickup in the middle position, rather than a neck pickup... at least, when it comes to brands that do make specific voicings for different positions. that seems to allow a good option for lead work that can have a little more body to it and still have some bite. as such, putting a Saturday Night Special in the middle will depend on which one you put in there... the bridge model is a bit edgy, more so than being smooth.

For the type of versatility you're talking about, have you considered the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary pickups? the regular DP103 can go in any position, sorta like the old PAFs were used. and the DP223 is meant for the bridge, with about 12% more volume. they both have pretty balanced EQ voicings, which I seem to find let's more of the flavor of the instrument and the player come through a little more. another fun option that would blend with those is the Virtual Hot PAF, which isn't made any more. you can still find them here and there.

Ask to find out what models they are before they throw them in there.
