Pickup N00B!

Hi folks, I'm a n00b around here if you can't tell, but I needed to come straight to the source for some advice.

I have a '04 Gibson LP Studio, and I want to upgrade the neck & bridge pickups. I'm really looking for a very fluid tone when i switch to the neck pickup, and a thick, crunchy sound when using the bridge for palm-mute stuff. A lot of the stuff i'm influenced by is in the vein of hardcore/melodic metal, so to give you an idea, some bands i really like are Darkest Hour, Children of Bodom, Isis, Unearth, Iron Maiden, Comeback Kid, Thrice, Kid Dynamite, and others of a similar vein.

Which would be the appropiate SD pickups for what i'm looking for? Also, I really like the aesthetics of the stock Gibson alnico pickups (the solid silver bar), so i'd like to have them look the same just for continuity's sake.

Welcome to the forum.I like my APH neck and DD alot.Good neck cleans and great heavy tones from the bridge.

I think everyone has given good ideas. You have to be more specific and tell us about your RIG and settings.

the NO BRAINER is the CUSTOM and 59 neck. I personally prefer the Alnico Pro 2 neck for its smooth feel. As far as chunk in the bridge, if you don't mind Ceramics, a Custom or Invader will do. The Invader Shreds more, but the Custom has the PAFish tone while giving you power.

+1 on that, it's important to know the amp your using, the amp, I consider is main part of the distortion tone. I actually use a vintage output 59 humbucker for my metal tone and it works great with my high gain amp.

The PG/Custom combo is one of my favorite combos in a Gibby for any type of music.

Thanks for the tips guys! I had a friend of mine who listens/plays stuff in the same vein suggest a sh4 JB for bridge, sh2 jazz for the neck, which seems to be the standard combo regardless. i'll definitely look into all your suggestions.

sh4 and sh2 good for everything but if thick metal is your thing - and palm mutes- you'll be better with a Distortion bridge and neck , or a distortion bridge and sh2 neck .
If you want a fluid tone in neck you want a hot pickup so is the sh6 .

Thick crunchy tone for the bridge for palm muting, the Custom is what you are after. The Distortion is good but, it is not thick. The JB dosent have the tightness to give you that good chunk when palm muting. The Invader is thick, powerful, and can pull it off but, they are usually very muddy in a Les Paul so I would stay away!! The Custom will be about your best bet IMO!

For the neck...you want a very fluid tone. My pick for that would be the Alnico II pro but, a pearly gates is also a great pick!!!!
