Pickup question from a moron.

I'm sorry in advance for my ignorance. I've been just really jamming this year even if for a few years I was being lazy, so I dont know much of the techniqual stuff and all .. To top that off, I'm new to the Seymour community.

:smack:

Anywho to get to the point. I own an Epi G-400 (SG), and the pickups are just so plain to me. I dont get the tone and warmness I want. I play mostly rockish, metal stuff. Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold and lots more. I need something that will keep the sound nice and compact even if I crank the gain to the max on the MG100drx Marshall I'll get soon enough.

I was thinking about the JB's or the Invaders which are pretty badass. I've seen stuff on the Dimebuckers on here, it would seen fitting but can you put covers on that? Oh and, could a local guitar shop wax them for me if I did get a cover-less pickup. Oh and can you buy covers?

So yea, I was looking for a warm sound. Some nice crunchy lows that will still be clean even with alot of distortion. And screaming highs. I dont know if this is achievable, but if I can atleast have some pointers here and there or something. If it is possible to get something like what I'm looking for, hook me up.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long questions and all. I feel like I'll be beaten up after these stupid questions. :blackeye:

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

Welcome to the forum.

Don't worry about the questions. Remember, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

As far as what pickups you could go with, I would say Jazz in the neck and a Screamin Demon in the bridge will do what you want, though that pickup set can be bright in the wrong guitar. If your SG is on the bright side when played unplugged, try a 59n and a Custom 5 in the bridge.

BTW, I believe that these pickups, save for the Screamin Demon, can be ordered from Duncan with covers and wax potted.

Thank you, and thanks for the help. I'll check that out and see what it gives me. Thanks in advance guys.

Oh and, I cant really tell but just picking at it a bit. I'd say It's bright. But then again I have nothing else to compare it to so .. Doh.

well to be hones,t u dont really need to compare it.
i mean if it sounds bright to you then it sounds bright to you. so get something that isnt that bright.
your ears will be the judge of what kinda tone you want. so dont go buying stuff based on what others just say. listen to the sound clips of the pups and decide for yourself which one sounds better for you. we only give recommendations on what we believe is good to our own ears.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

I have C5's in my Epi LP's. I think that definetely may be the tone your looking for. Give 'em a try, you can't go wrong. And if you decide you don't like 'em, you can exchange 'em for a different model. Just post back about what you didn't like about 'em and someone here will guide you in the right direction.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

The Demon is bright in my Gothic SG.....I'd try a Custom or C5 with a '59 neck instead. Unless you have a dark sounding amp.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

Yea, I like the sound of the Custom 5 and 59 in the neck. Too bad theres no sound clip for the custom 5. But yea, I only wanted to know peoples opinion and expertise on this. I dont really know tone all that good yet, and with you guys' help .. Ya know. I know you can exchange them if you dont like them, but the only store who sells Seymour stuff is like an hour away from my place near Montreal. $100 on gas almost to go down there and back.

So basically you play metal? This is my recommendation.

The SD Tone Wizard Suggests:

Bridge 1 SH-4 JB Model
Bridge 2 SH-5 Duncan Custom
Neck 1 SH-1N '59 Model
Neck 2 SH-2N Jazz Model

I can get screaming highs from the JB, but I usually don't like that. If that's what you want, cool. The Hot Rodded combo would probably be a good place to start, since it's cheaper than buying separately, and both come 4-wire for wiring up splits (which I would highly recommend). However, remember Seymour Duncan has the 21-day policy: if it isn't working out for ya, they'll swap it for a different pickup.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

59 / Dimebucker might be cool, but you cannot put a cover on the dimebucker if thats a deal breaker.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

Hmm, yea. I'm slowly making up my mind. I wanted that Dimebag-ish sound you know. But still be able to get some nice and warm tones for different stuff.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

I have a good idea on what I'll get now, either the Jazz and JB combo, or a pair of badass Invaders cover or no cover whatever. Hehe.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

Out of the two, I'd opt for the Jazz/JB based solely on versatility.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

yeah, if you are going to choose from one of those two sets, go for the hot rodded one.

Re: Pickup question from a moron.

There is, however, a "distortion mayhem" set, just in case you want dual Distortion pickups (neck and bridge), and plan on literally playing ONLY metal :D

Umm...No. The Distortion is not a "Metal" only set. Sure, it has a good amount of output, but its not fair or accurate to say its for metal only.

Might as well be though :D

Come on, we're all giving opinions here :D

Yes and no. You'd be surprised how well that pickup adapts to different playing styles. I had a set installed in a PRS a few years back and it cleaned up pretty nicely with the volume knob rolled back.

The "Tone Wizard" is a good baseline, but IMHO, doesn't supercede what people's opinions are that have actually used the pickups in question in different applications.

So the distortion pickups can only be used for metal and any A2 mag pup can't be used for metal.

You paint too many pickups in a corner.
