Pickup similarity question

I tried a JB bridge pickup, and i loved the sound on the lower strings and hated the higher ones. The three lowest were perfect but the three highest were to trebly and biting and harsh. What pickup has similar lows to the JB but is smoother up high?

You might try replacing the A5 bar magnet with an A2 magnet... it should smooth out the response of the top 3 strings a bit and hopefully not screw up the sound of the bottom 3 strings for you.

The JB does have a "hard" upper midrange/treble in some guitars through some amps. Not all guitars...but some.

It's a 16.6K pickup and alnico 5. Those extra windings thicken up the mids alot in the JB.

The 59B is a 9K pickup. I prefer it to the JB but the mids are not as thick and the output not as strong.

Maybe you should try a Duncan Custom. It has strong bass, mids and treble but doesn't have that upper midrange spike that some complain about in the JB.

The alnico 5 Custom 5 is also worth a consideration but, IMO, it doesn't have quite as thick a midrange as the JB or Custom.

The Custom Custom is one of my very favorites. It's alnico 2 and has strong buttery smooth pronounced mids. It's a killer pickup and very Van Halenish in tone, but it's not as bright and the bass is not as big and tight as most alnico 5 pickups.

I think you might like the Duncan Custom.

Re: Pickup similarity question

btw, the neck pickup is an Alnico II Pro (APH1) and I have heard that the Custom Custom is a great match. How would the custom custom be in relation to the custom?

Re: Pickup similarity question

If you have an A2Pro in the neck forget everything I said and go for the Custom Custom. :laugh2: They are wonderful together!

I can second that!!! Lew told me to get a CC for the bridge and a Seth for the neck in one of my guitars...the guitar has 25 year old gold hardware so a new gold Seth would have looked bad IMO and a nickle one would have been even worse so I went with an Alnico II Pro in thte neck and the CC in the bridge...I love this guitar more that ever!!!

Re: Pickup similarity question

If you generally like the JB, but find the treble strings too trebly, go with a Custom. I have a Custom and an A2Pro in a guitar, and they are a good combination. A Custom Custom would also work, but it would be a bigger jump from the JB.
