Pickup Start Winding/Polarity Question

ehdwuld

A Ficus
ok on my SD pickups
I can check the coils
black/white for one coil
red/green the other coil

and the chart says the north is start is black, etc

on my non SD pickups
I get the same
black/white for one coil
red/green the other coil

but one set seems to be green start
it has the shield and the black tied together

and another set has the green and shield tied together

some one posted I could wave a screw driver over top and tell which was north or south
but I haven't had any luck with that

is there any way to tell magnetic north and south with a meter?

Re: Pickup Start Winding/Polarity Question

The mag determines which polarity each coil is on hums. You can orient it however you want. Either use another mag that you know the polarity of to check the unknown mag or use a compass. Duncan mags have a marking on the north side with a marker. Stock orientaion is usually north slugs and south screws.

Re: Pickup Start Winding/Polarity Question

i was thinking more Slug or Screw
but ok thanks that sounds good
I'll try a compass

Re: Pickup Start Winding/Polarity Question

ok compass says the screw coil is south
and slug is north

now I need to find out about the coils
which ones
the red/green coil or the white/black coil
is screw or slug

alligator clip to an output jack and plug into amp

you guys are awesome

thanks

Re: Pickup Start Winding/Polarity Question

alright White/Black is going to be the slug coil on both non SD sets
as well as the SD sets

for the record the two sets I was looking at are the Yibuy set from Amazon and the Donlis Set From Aliexpress

they both are similar in specs to the JB/Jazz set that I am so fond of

with the exception of the Yibuy set having ceramic magnets instead of the Alnico 5 that both the SD and Donlis sets use

I plan on trying them out in one of my recent Chinese guitar builds

thanks everyone
