Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

I got 335 copy hollow body. Now I have two sets of pickups that I spared for this guitar ... APH set (Alnico 2) and Dimarzio PAF Classic set (Alnico 5). Honestly I have no clue which set would be better in hollow body guitars. Of course, I could go with a Jazz set or Seth Set. I am extra cautious because it's really hard to install pickups in this guitar.

What would you suggest?

Assuming the Dimarzio sounds similar to 59er? I think your all set for PuPs!
I have a 335 copy with a 59er (Bridge) and a APH (neck) IMHO it's a killer
setup for a 335. In the bridge I get a great vintage Blues tone, Than switch
to the neck and get a sweet & warm tone . great for articuate chords or
you can dial up a nice Jazz by rolling the tone back. So get ready to go
fishing... :) Get some Bakery string if you can ( I find that works good)
Just think it though B4 you take it a part. It makes goin' back together
that much eazy. :D

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

i used dental floss to work on my semi hollow ... good luck ...

... i'd try the classic PAFs first ... but the A2P neck/PAF bridge would be sweet as well i bet

good luck,

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

My Heritage 535 came with Antiquities and it's the first time I've had a guitar I never even considered changing the pups on. Oh, OK, I admit that Phat Cats would be really cool to try in it...

How bright is the guitar acoustically? Mine is bright & sweet unplugged, so the Alnico 2 pups warm up the tone nicely. It's just classic to my ears.

Please keep in mind that KMC is waaaaay more experienced than I am though.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

Falstaff had a 335 copy for quite some time - I think he would recommend Antiquities or another "nice" PAF copy.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

I'd go for the Seth Lovers. Or Antiquities. I doubt you'll ever need to change them again! But of the two sets you were originally thinking of, I'd try the Alinco2Pros first. Lew

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

I think a set of Seths would be perfect in a 335-style guitar.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

Seths should probably be top of the list, I personally wouldn't go any hotter than a PAF style, although which one depends on which "flavour" you want

Word! I think a PAF style PU in that type of guitar is heavenly. You can get some rockin' tones out of the bridge pickup.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

I agree with Lew and Simon. You might also consider a Jazz in the neck to go with either the Seth or Antiquity bridge.
As for changing the pups, consider having a reputable tech do it. If not, get some nylon fishing line and tie it to each control so you can get them back into their right spot once you've pulled them out of the guitar and soldered the pups in.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

A friend of mine had a yamaha solidbody w/ PAF Classics and I liked the sound alot - Just a good normal PAF sound - a little less bass and more mids than the (I think) 59 in my Ibanez V, but not too different. I think one of those two sets should be great. The Bass on the PAF classics isn't woofy, so you could go with just the set. I've only tried the APH II in the neck position of a Strat, where it sounded great, so I can't help you there. They might be a little dark in a hollowbody, depending on how bright your guitar and amp are.

If I had either of those sets, actually, I'd just put them in because they'd proabably be great, and you've already spent the $$$.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

Thanks guys!

I am gonna try PAF classics first. I am not going to install them by myself because I've never been good at fishing. I am taking my guitar to a local luthier for nut, fret level and pickup install.

Cheers,

That's a good idea, if you've never done it before. Semi-hollows are a bit tricky.

Good luck!

That's what I was thinking too. Odd for me to suggest DiMarzios, but that set might be real nice in that Washburn HB-35. A bone nut and fret dress would probably make it equal to much more expensive guitars. As it is, the wood and construction is real good on the Washburn semi-hollows. Surprisingly good for the great price they sell at.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

Jonesy,

Wouldn't a new nut destroy the buzz feiten system? I still have very little clue but, according to what I read, the nut is a part of the system.

Re: Pickup Suggestion for 335 copy

I never regretted installing Seth Lovers in my Epi Dot. Did the bone nut, fret dress thing too, played and sounded absolutely great! Best $399 guitar I ever had.

I like Alnico II as a general rule, but Carlton got otherworldly tones out of his Alnico V loaded 335. :burnout:
