Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I am having a guitar built. It is a single cut LP style.
Body: Korina
Neck: Madagascar Rosewood
Top: Quilted Maple
Fretboard: Ebony

I need pickups! Please help!

I play hard rock with a band, but really like Bluesy tones too. I have a PRS with 57/08's that I love. I've considered PRS #7's and #10's. I have never owned SD's. Any ideas?

Cheers

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Before I make a solid recommendation I have to reiterate what was asked before what do you want to hear from the bridge and neck pickups? What equipment will be used in conjunction with the guitar? Amps, pedals, tuning?

From the little info you have provided you could go with a PATB-3 Blues Scaraceno, 59s, one of the Custom series pickups, or Pearly gates.

Thanks all. Here is my equipment:

Diezel Herbert MKII (180watt)
Mesa Roadster (Dual Rectifier 100watt)
Mesa 4x12 cabs
Analogman King of Tone OD pedal (I use this to push the tubes...I can't push the headroom in either amp without cops coming to my house)
MXR 10 band EQ (modded)
Drop D tuning...occasionally C but rarely

I play hard rock in a band, but need to get a blues tone too...a combination between vintage and high output. Not an easy demand. I will have an out-of-phase option as well.

Thanks for the help and the welcome

59/Custom bridge, GFS Mean 90 neck

There are so many options for what you want.

What other artist's tone do you like?

Or maybe you need somethinf hotter in the bridge to drive your amps harder. I dunno. Specifics help

I would say that Tool and Chevelle would be the hard influences and Bonamassa would be the blues influence. I do realize bonamassa has some seymour ties, but it is a little too much PAF for the setup I have. Again, hard to drive the headroom on that much amp. Need a touch more output and I need to take into account the ebony fretboard and rosewood neck.

Thanks all for the help!

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I think you just described the 59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge, as a starting point.

Its pretty hard to beat the PG neck for the neck of a single cut guitar. It has more clairity than usual but without a boomy bass.

The rosewood neck is going to make things a little different from a normal LP- in a good way. It is as warm as a mahogony neck but is more articulate. You might need to do some trial and error experimentation to dial in what will work on that guitar with your amps.

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

BTW, what scale length is this guitar going to be?

25 with 22 frets.
...I like the suggestions, and it's been a blast to research. I understand this is a sd forum, but some players I have talked to have mentioned Dimarzio (sp?) with which I have no experience. Any thoughts there?

Thanks

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Their 36th Anninversary PAF is hotter than most PAFs type pickups, so it might meet your needs for blues and modern rock in one. Their Air Classic neck is a good neck pickup.

Their Air Norton is very a popular neck pickup balanced with high output bridge pickups. The Airzone is their PAF on steroids but it may be way too much lows in a single cut type guitar.

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I will check them out...more than half the fun for me is learning about what's out there and trying to figure out what will work and be unique. I appreciate it

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I absolutely love the Air Norton and Liquifire from Dimarzio but i really dont think its what u want.

I could be wrong

I like those pickups for neck shreds and sweeps. They can def play blues. No doubt about it, but i feel you could get better sounds from other pickups for what u want

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I listened to a ton of Dimarzio audio clips and there is a lot of soloing done. I wasn't able to hear much riff work. THey sound great soloing, but what about rhythm and riff work? any thoughts?

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Yep , Dimarzio is associated with shred style playing. This is partly due to their association with Ibanez guitars and therefore Ibanez players-who are often shredders.

As a general rule Duncan = more vintage voicing.

Dimarzio = more modern voicing.

That's just a generalization though. Of course both offer modern and vintage voicings. As far as vintage voiced Dimarzio humbuckers the selection is mainly limited to the Air Classics and 36ths for the most part. Most of their selection is modern voiced.

Duncan Customs retain a general PAF voice at a higher output. The 59/Custom hybrid was a development of players here taking 59's and Customs apart and then combining them.

There's also the custom shop Brobucker which is an over wound PAF

There's also the custom shop 78 which is a hot PAF-think Van Halen

Makes sense. I m definitely in the SD camp for this guitar. A hotter wound PAF is perfect I think. I will look into your suggestions. Thanks for the help
