Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

I've never played the brobucker, and I've played two pickups that have similar specs (~9k, one A2 and the other A5) to the '78, as well as the 59/custom with A2, A4, A5, and A8.

The 59/Custom with A8 is probably the most well rounded out of that bunch. Tight bass and fluid leads but more compressed feeling than more vintage pickups. Still plenty open for a hot bridge pickup though.

Ok.....

So, judging by your specs I am assuming you are going to order a private stock singlecut from PRS. I own a PS singlecut with almost the EXACT specs you are describing (mine uses Honduran Mahogany for the body wood). I have also used all the PRS pickups you are thinking about. Keep in mind that the rosewood neck on your guitar is a BIG deal....it will certainly effect which pickups sound optimal in your instrument. The rosewood neck imparts a "hi-fi" quality to the sound....it expands both the top and the bottom. This can be both good and bad. Clean and overdriven it sounds very 3-D and huge; high gain can sound unfocused.

1) 5708's, #7's and #10's: The 10's are a rare bird; I have only ever played them in another PS. I personally wouldn't get them in a SC with a RW neck.....too warm and mushy with high gain. 5708's are a cool PAF, although I think 5909's might be a better fit with the extra heat they provide. They stay nice a tight and are versatile. #7's are really cool!! I would describe them as a very modern sounding PAF: more midrange and output compared to the 5XXX series and the 'duncan '59 with lots of clarity and a tight bass. They were designed for the SC's.
2) My PS currently has 'duncans in it: Like I say, the rosewood neck makes the guitar "pickier" IMO when it comes to pickups. I have found it sounds best with PAF type or moderate output 'buckers (the OG El Diablo and Distortion are exceptions) with some midrange heft. From the core line, although I have yet to play them, the "whole lotta" set would fit that bill and they are getting GREAT reviews. You could also go Custom shop, but that is a whole other 'ball game.....albeit a great option if you can't get what you want.

I would order your guitar (if it were me) with 5909's or #7's....play it through your rig and evaluate. See what you like and don't like and go from there. Or, maybe it will be perfect!

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Anybody know where I can get some PRS #10's? They are in the finals. I am going to try both the 10"s and the SD's and sell the ones I like least. I will let you know what I decided for the SD's when I don't have a baby trying to contribute to my post.

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Ok. I got it narrowed down I think:
Custom shop Brobucker
SH-11 Custom Custom
APH-1 Alnico II Pro (Neck)
59 Custom Hybrid (SH-16)

Now I have no idea about what should go in the neck, and what should go in the bridge and which combo to go with...SUggestions please and thanks again for all the help.

Cheers

VERY Helpful. Thanks. I am not ordering a PRS Private stock. I was going to but I found something different. Kevin Pederson Custom Guitar for me (if you're interested: http://www.abyssguitars.com). Nice evaluation though as I was well on my way down that road before finding and chatting with this gentleman. This info is really helpful. Thank you.

Re: Pickup suggestion for a custom guitar?

Hey Vance, glad the info was of some use. I was a bit presumptuous in assuming you were ordering a private stock, it was just the specs that screamed "PRS" to me. I think you made a great choice: those Pederson custom guitars look lights out! Let us all know what you decide on and most importantly, share some pics of your custom guitar once you get it!

No worries. I started down the PRS path, but wanted something that is a bit more personal. Kevin Pederson and I came up with a concept that is completely personalized. We hunted down the desired wood, and he has added his artistry. I can't wait to share pics.

I went with the #7's. I got a set of #7 Brazilians. Nickel with Gold pegs. They aren't going to be able to be out-of-phase connected I don't think. I am going to goof with this a bit I think. Set it up with the #7's and change them out with the best SD combo of the 4 I put out there (or others if I dig some other suggestions). Thanks again :thanks:
