Pickup suggestions for a 77 gibson lp

Re: Pickup suggestions for a 77 gibson lp

I can confirm the more open sound. I think the more output is a function of increased highs making the dynamics and output seem higher. I don't think it actually is higher output, but it will sound that way. More sparkle and highs and open sound for sure.

In time, switches, jacks will get gunked/oxidized. Replacing those will definitely will clear the sound up. Sometimes contact spray just doesn't do the trick anymore.

I really like how your guitar sounds now, so no suggestions from me!

Save the money and take the wife for a nice dinner. That's a great sounding guitar.

Did the 70s Les Pauls have t-tops?

I thought mid 70s LPs (or at least some) had tarbacks originally...?

The Tarbacks were primarily put in the SGs and the L6

But as its the Norlin period, they would tend to stick in anything if there was a shortage. There have been reports of Tarbacks in the odd LP......but 99% got T-tops.

A factory routed deluxe would have got T-tops too.

Re: Pickup suggestions for a 77 gibson lp

Just installed the Riff Raffs that were in my SG in my LPC. They sounded a little stiff and bright in my SG, so I out the WLH in there. Switching the covers was a pita, but man do these sound phenomenal in this guitar. Got that clean tone that I remember from the T-Tops that were in my first guitar, but without the bridge sounding weak under gain. Highly recommended if you want to stay with vintage output.
The Dimarzio 36th Ann were great too. Kind of like brighter and more articulate APH-1 pickups to me (even though they're A5) with a very good pickup to pickup balance. Couldn't really gel with the added compression, mids and A2 flavour. Playing just became too easy if that makes sense.

also kind of curious about the 36th anniv. im looking for vintage tone and output with a more modern feel. i like describing it as "sticky" where the notes seem to stick to the fingers as you play leads. its kind of hard to describe but is that a result of compression? easy/effortless to play is one thing i look for as well. plus the aged covers look awesome. you think it would work?

From what you're describing I'd say there's a big chance they will work for you. Vintage tone (but with a lot more mids) with a more modern compressed feel is exactly what they are imo. They have loads of thick sustain on the high notes whilst the lows remain controllable in both the neck and bridge positions. The attack was a bit spongier/softer (A2 like) than you'd expect from A5 pickups.

If your looking for something vintagey that makes playing easier and can handle quite a lot of gain, these would be something to try out. Certainly considering the price point.
