Pickup suggestions for SG (57s not doing it)

Hey everyone. I've been living my SG, but I've been finding the 57 pickups to be a bit too thin and shrill in the bridge and the neck too dark.
I'm looking for my sound to be tighter, saturated, warmer but still clear under gain.

It's funny I like the sound of my amp more currently when I'm wearing headphones. I guess it's filtering the sound in a way that I like. But when i try to adjust the eq to match it i cant.

A Custom 5 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck ought to take care of that.

I think the SNS Bridge would be a good call (wish I thought of it), but it seems like he may want a brighter neck.

Yeah I was looking at the sns. Do they work well for heavier like mild drop tuning or heavier punk stuff. Would like some good palm muting in addition to open sounds. If any of that made sense.

Re: Pickup suggestions for SG (57s not doing it)

The SNS doesn't strike me as a pickup particularly adept at heavy palm muting. I'd go with the SH-14 for that.

What amp are you using? What speakers are in the cab(combo)? Open back or closed? The reason I ask is you must like the sound in one way, but then you dont like the sound from your speakers? Never would steer you away from SD PUPS, but are you sure you like your amp or the speakers? I think nothing is more important than whats vibrating the air

SH-14 & '59N were the most popular recommendations for SG's when I joined here 10 years ago. That changed to C8's when Addiction FX showed up selling A8's. My favorite Custom variant is with an UOA5, which has a richer texture and more of a vintage sound. Not sure about palm muting with it. I can understand the disappointment with '57's.

The SNS set is probably a little too dynamic if you want consistency- at least in the bridge. I do like the idea of the Custom. It isn't a particularly warm pickup, though.

You can palm-mute with a Custom UA5. For mag swaps, I'd probably go Custom with a rough A5 before anything.

Yeah I thing it's just that I want the bass tighter less flubby and the highs present but maybe not as overwhelming in a thin sense

Right. I was just thinking out loud associating SGs with the high voltage set.

I think you'd be happy with the beefy A5 based pickups. Generally, you'd lose some mids but you'd have solid bass and stinging highs.

I'd take bluesmans tip (SH14 and 59n) but don't tinker with the stock mags until after you tried them stock. If I was to choose any A5 neck bucker it would be the 59.

Ben had some good questions that are accentuated at higher volumes. Some speakers are flubby on the low end when driven with some decent band volume.

I think I'll try the sh14 and 59 thanks everyone. Maybe look at the pots and caps while I'm at it.
Sorry Ben well I have a boss katana 50. I like it for what it's worth but I haven't even played it at band volumes yet.

No need to be sorry. Good luck in your tone quest!!
