Pickup Suggestions

Yeah, I know there's a pickup wizard, but I don't think it really can categorize my guitar right. Well, my future guitar. I'm going to have it built soon.
It's a custom built guitar, with 3/4" walnut on top and 1" of mahogany on the back. It's gonna have chambers cut in, to cut down on the weight, which might be a doozy, and also add to sustain.
I loved the sound of walnut guitars I had played before - a great bright tone, while having a complex midrange. Leads sounded great. But I didn't want to have the whole thing made of Walnut, so I wanted the back to be Mahogany.
I'm planning to get a Maple neck, so that way the tone is more focused on the body wood...

Now, I play rock, some punk, some classic, little bit of everything. I already on an Epiphone SG with a Jazz/Duncan Custom setup, and I love it.

So, I have humbuckers on my SG, but I want more sonic options - so I wanted to put single coils on this guitar, maybe P90s.
If that were possible, I'd like to have a P90/Single/P90 setup.

Does that really match the guitar? How would those pickups reflect the tone wood?

Throw me anything at me, even setups that aren't what I specified. I want something that'll sound great for this guitar.

Hell, even throw me gripes about the guitar design, if you want.
It's not built yet, so if there's something you think is fundamentally wrong with it, I'll take it into consideration.

Re: Pickup Suggestions

Cutting down the weight increases sustain? I didn't know that.

Normally I'd say stick to what you know (the Jazz/Custom combo).

I don't know how good/bad the humbucker sized P90's are, but if they aren't too bad, maybe route the guitar for a H-S-H and use H-sized P90's. If you don't like them, it's easy to put in your favorite humbucker combo.

And that's not to say that you favorite combo might sound like an ass in your new guitar. Anything can happen.

I would say try some P90 guitars first to see if you like the tone. Try to find something similar to what you are making (maybe a P90 loaded SG).

Re: Pickup Suggestions

Nah, I was saying that adding those chambers should increase the sustain.

Yeah, I've heard the Phat Cats, and they sound pretty nifty, but definitely different than a P90. Not bad, just different.

Also, I've tried P90 guitars before, and I love the gritty sound. They're just plain dirty and nasty. It's great. I'm just wondering if they'd sound good in that kind of wood.

Re: Pickup Suggestions

I actually listened to Rio Grande's Fat Bastard and Bastard pickups, and they sound great, and owuld fit in a humbucker space. Does anyone have any input as to how those would sound in the wood I mentioned?
