Pickup swap to JB and 59 in PRS SE

Re: Pickup swap to JB and 59 in PRS SE

i cant believe all Mahogany type guitars with stop tails will sound bad with a JB in them.

I didn't say 'all.' When we have had threads on JB's and mahogany, you wouldn't believe the complaints & colorful descriptions of the awful tones. Pretty funny. Sometimes players are pleased with a JB in a mahogany guitar, even an occasional LP, but that's the exception. It's only fair to give someone a heads-up that if so-and-so has a great-sounding JB in a Strat or Tele, there's a good chance it's going to sound very different in his LP, SG, PRS, etc. The average player doesn't know this. If this is the first aftermarket PU he's ever bought, then he might want to pick something with a high rate of success for his kind of guitar.

Say JB's sound good in, let's say, 25% of mahogany guitars (pick a number), then if he has an LP and you recommend a JB, and he's winds up bummed out by the way it sounds, I don't think that was very good advice. He didn't have the odds in his favor. A Custom, C5, or C8 would have probably worked better.

That's odd, DD is all mids and top end.
I've never found that to be the case in my experience. I've used the DD for 20 years and theres plenty of low end coming out of my speakers! Some say it won't do clean either........

Re: Pickup swap to JB and 59 in PRS SE

I had a PRS Custom 22 with the trem bridge and the JB for playing metal was leaps and bounds better then the Dragon II pickup.

The Dragon II's are sweet and work really well with higher-gain lower toned amps like Mesa Triple Rectifiers. That's my 1.5 cent opinion.

I just really liked the voicing of the JB in the PRS Custom 22.

Yeah, I love my JB for heavy metal voicing. High output, good mids, not too much bass, and a singing high end that sounds sweet. And, don't mention the gorgeous distorted tone and lovely artificial harmonics.

i prefer it to the JB for cleans, actually.
and agree about the lows; there was plenty there when i was using one

I don't know what an a2 would sound like in a JB but I would like to find out someday. But for me I like the JB quite a bit and I took it for granted in the past. Sure there are better pickups out there than the JB and for the most part it comes down to taste and preference. I like the JB because it's been the best sounding pickup for cleans and distorted tones. I haven't found a pickup that sounds good in both areas, it's usually one or the other. I've tried other brands and other Duncan pickups like the Custom 5, Custom Custom, 59 and Invader and didn't click with them. My trusty JB has been my mainstay in my Classic and Studio Les pauls.

Re: Pickup swap to JB and 59 in PRS SE

It was designed for a Tele, not an LP.

As far as I know that's not completely true: it was a rewound pickup coming from a gibson guitar and it was used in Blow by blow session on a Les Paul through a marshall plexi 50W, I'm sure we can hear it in 'Cause we've ended as lovers'.

Regarding JB's + mahogany, my friend has an ltd eclipse with JB/59. When I'm jamming on it I basically can't stand to even use the JB, it just isn't right for this guitar, somehow it just sounds very thin compared to the stock 59 in the neck (which is incredible). I am mainly a bridge pickup player, always rocking and thrashing, but that LTD JB always compels me to diversify my skills on the neck pickup.

Prefer the JB/jazz combo much more.
I've always found the JB/59 combo a bit odd and difficult to balance. Tried it in alder, basswood and mahogany guitars and the JB works better in the first 2 I mentioned.
