Pickup Switching Options (and wiring)

Raging BB Gunologist
I'm modding a Strat to use just one pickup (SD JB) in the bridge. All the others have been removed.

What I'm looking for is a way to wire the JB for Series, Parallel, Split, and Phased modes using the existing hardware (Strat 5-way, one volume and two tone pots). I have it wired for Series and split already, just need the other two.

Any ideas? Is this possible?

Re: Pickup Switching Options (and wiring)

Let me get this straight, you are wiring up a Strat with just One pup, and you want to be able to go from series to split to parallel to being in or out of phase with itself ... correct? Using the existing hardware alone ... err ...let me think about that, and get back to you.

Nobody?

Well, I was thinking of replacing the 5-way a couple of switches for the fun of it. Maybe this is my excuse.

I thought you were trying to use the existing switch and controls, anyway I don't really see a way to do it ... three DPDT switches will go in the space of the 5 way ... you can cut a decorative cover for the slit later.Using that then you could get a variety of what your seeking. Stock I don't think you could do it though.

I agree. I drew up about a dozen different scenarios, and couldn't get it to fly. You can make it work by adding one DPDT switch, but even then, you'll have a couple "dead", or dis-allowed positions.

Re: Pickup Switching Options (and wiring)

If I were doing this, I'd start with a fresh pickguard cut JUST for the humbucker. That way, you can have exactly the controls you need and not owrry about extra holes etc.

As for series/split/parralel and in phase/outta phase switching, the little bit of paper that came in the pickup box shoudl help with that. How you have it is up to you... a mini toggle for each? A big toggle for each? You coudl go push pulls if you're planning on haveing a tone pot too, but given the simplicity it wouldn't hurt to have separate toggles.

Re: Pickup Switching Options (and wiring)

I didn't think it would work (with the existing controls), but it was worth a shot asking you guys.

I'm going to install a couple of mini toggles for now and get a custom pickguard cut shortly.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you mind if I ask . . . how did you come by that screen name? :)

(I love it.)

Re: Pickup Switching Options (and wiring)

I don't think that you can do this w/ the standard Strat lever switch.

If you use a 4P5T "superswitch" lever switch, you can. Since you have three controls, you can have two extra tones/volumes for particular positions.

I'll think about how to do the following:
Pos Effect
5(N). Both coils in series (humbucking)
4. Neck side coil only (not humbucking)
3. Both coils in parallel (humbucking)
2. Bridge side coil only (not humbucking)
1.(B). Both coils series out of phase (subtracting, not humbucking)

Yep, try this (B- grounded):
Pole 1 (N+)
5. Vol pot
4. Vol pot
3. Vol pot
2.
1. B+

Pole 2 (N-)
5. B+
4. Ground
3. Ground
2.
1. Vol pot

Pole 3 (B+)
5. N-
4.
3. Vol pot
2. Vol pot
1. N+

I don't think that you can get away w/ less than three poles since the neck needs to have its polarity switched.

Pole 4 (whatever your heart desires)

Do you feel the way you hate
Do you hate the way you feel
Always closer to the flame
Ever closer to the blade
I am poison crazy lush
Built these hands to lift me up
We are servants of our formulaic ways

I'm screaming daisies
From 14 miles away
I've got my own time
Got it all today

Chorus:
Make up your mind
Need some help
To find this mind

Limbo this and limbo that
You were this and you were that
Ever know that what you fear is what you find
This indian summer
I signed my life away
There's a greedy fly in here
And I fly away

Repeat Chorus
Repeat Chorus
Repeat Chorus

Greedy Fly - Bush

Do they actually make something like this and where can I find one? I've never seen one before.
