Pickup upgrade and cabinet speakers?

Hey,

Totally newbie here. Read a lot of forums for info and have some questions. One of course is common, p bass pickup upgrade.
The other is in regards to 15" speaker replacement. So here it goes.

I just bought a '99 Fender mim p bass, in total mint condition for a killer price. I could not believe it when I received it. Anyways I'm throwing a Gotoh 201 on her, D string slips a little and string rattles. Common. My goal was to replace the pickups, but with my Rumble 500 v3 2x10 combo they sound pretty good, maybe because they seem to be barely used. I was debating between, S/D Vintage SPB-1, S/D 1/4 lb'er SPB-3, S/D Steve Harris SPB-4, or Fender '62. My concern with the SPB-1 is the high treble and low mid's from looking at the graph, same with the SPB-3, which I've read is a pretty hot p/u, but like that David Gilmour uses them. I just upgraded a '01 mim jazz and went with the Dimarzio's (because there were a direct drop in, well kinda) 149's but way to much treble, so exchanged for the 123's. They were much better, but ended up not liking the jazz sound and it's up for sale. The Steve Harris sound seems very even between b, m, t, from the graph, but haven't not found much in regards to comparing them to other p/u's. I have listened to all the S/D sound clips, and believe they are subjective. I believe you have to play them (through your gear) to get the true sound. I have read a lot about the Fender '62 but not sound graph or sound clip's that I can find. I assume way different than my stock mim, and assume same as the SPB-1. I love the mids and want them in the mix, and I play everything from disco to thrash, no country sorry...So what do other bass players think??

As for the cabinet, I found one at my corner Goodwill. Fender sidekick 100 bass in killer shape. It was loaded with a Carvin PS15, 8, 400 watt. But doesn't work...lol...but for $19.99 didn't bother me. So I am looking at Eminence as that's what my rumble has in it. I have narrowed it to three, Delta 15LFA, Kappa 15LFA, or Kappa Pro 15A, which it pushing the budget. So what are people thoughts out there about these speakers? And if anyone can help me get an idea of manufacture date, that would be cool. S/N B 00636.

Thanks everyone :smokin

Re: Pickup upgrade and cabinet speakers?

Welcome to the forum.

Given the nature of the instrument, I would veer away the vintage-style pickups and concentrate on the hotter models, the SD SPB-3 and SPB-4.

The other questions that spring to mind are,
1) roundwound or flatwound strings?
2) plectrum or fingers?

Re: Pickup upgrade and cabinet speakers?

Thanks for reply. What do you mean by nature of instrument? Use roundwound and pick. Have you played either 3 or 4's?

Thanks

Re: Pickup upgrade and cabinet speakers?

The MIM Precision Bass cannot be expected to exhibit all the subtleties of a genuine vintage piece. In my opinion, it is wiser to compensate for the likely tonal deficiencies by opting for a pickup with greater than vintage output and a wider frequency response.

SPB-3? Yes. SPB-4? No.

Most of my P Bass style pickups are active - one 1989 EMG-P, one Duncan/Basslines APB-2 Lightnin' Rods, several APB-1 Pro Active and approximately three of the old Active EQ "switch" pickups.

Enough about me, already.

Other passive P-style pickups that you might want to investigate are the Bartolini 8S and the DiMarzio DP146 Will Power Middle.

The blog gives the general historical picture. The glaring omission is the fact that one of the vital ingredients in the deep, punchy sound of Fifties Rock, Sixties Soul and R'n'B was flatwound strings.

Same applies to the Steve Harris sound. Check out the specs on his signature Fender bass. http://intl.fender.com/en-GB/series...ecision-bass-maple-fingerboard-olympic-white/

In my opinion, the OP's MIM P Bass + Gotoh 201B + SPB-4 pickup + flats would knock 'em dead.

If one of the stock machineheads is suspect, relocate it to the E string position. If, in future, you ever decide to invest in a Hipshot Extender, it will replace that dodgy 'head.

Thanks all. The sound clips were cool, but again subjective. And how many people get up in their bass when it's the sound we want. Good playing though. I'll check out the other p/u's Funk mentioned. No flatwounds though. Put the Gotoh on yesterday, and need to lower string height, without shim.
