Pickups for 24"scale in Drop C

I am fixing up my Squire SuperSonic that was a gift from my family when was 13. I've had it professionally set up with a set of 11-58 tuned to Drop C and it intonates fine. I really like the way the guitar plays now.

When it comes to the stock humbuckers, the seem to be medium output with almost a single coil esque twang to the attack combined with a flubby bottom. The guitar has no tone knob, just dual volumes. I am not sure if this really effects the tone I am currently getting out of these stock pickups.

My style is high gain, kinda progressive with lots of odd chord voicings. Looking for something reasonably tight in the lows clear enough treble for chord defenition. I'd like to stay in the medium to high output range.

I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Sounds to me like you are looking for something with scooped mids. I'd recommend a Custom 5 bridge and a Jazz neck. They both have A5 magnets so they have the solid bass and clear treble that you are looking for. I played an ESP with this combo and it rocked for drop tunings, I only went to D standard though and it's in a 25" scale mahogany guitar, so you should wait for a few more people to chime in before setting your heart on this set.

A Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge would be a good choice. And extra bonus with the D-Sonic is that it can be flipped around for a slightly different tone/eq because one coil is screws and one is a blade. It is nice and clear drop tuned.

Custom or custom 5 will give you tight big bottom, good chord definition and medium output.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I am gonna pass on Dimarzios, they seem dark to my ears. I like the rawness of the SD pickup line overall better. Right now the Custom 5 is winning based of youtube clips. The Pegasus sounds good, but I worry it has a bit too much lows or low mids for this particular guitar compared to the other pickups suggested.

I have and love the Hybrid. It isn't like a super tight metal pickup, but it does so many things well, that I don't care. You get a great sound across every gain range, and a great split sound. You might have to boost the output with a pedal if you are going for a more modern sound.

I agree with your take on the difference in the Dimarzio and Duncan lines. Duncan definitely has the more raw or organic sounds in spades. Raw, vintage, open/sweet - I go Duncan. I've always seen the Dimarzios as more modern or hifi, which sounded like what you were after.

Alt8 is what I'm about to suggest to you. It's tight. It's articulate. It can handle thick string gauge you'll need for dropping tune short scale guitar and still deliver definition. Compared to Custom in 24.75" for Drop C tuning, it's not as thumpy as Custom in low end.

I have and love the '59/C Hybrid, too, but it's a pickup that seems to be a better fit for my mid-gain classic/'80s rock thing. For the OP, I would definitely suggest something hotter and tighter, like the Custom or the Custom 5 or pretty much any Duncan that Keith Merrow ever used.

Here's a comparison Keith Merrow did for almost all of the currently available humbuckers in a metal context.

Yeah this is what I have based my ideas on sp far. I actually like the most of these pickups except the actives, just not my thing. I also heard a clip of a PRS playing progressibe rock with the Custom 5, Custom and the Custom Custom. Liked them all for different reasons. Ah the paradox of choices....
