Pickups For 339

I have a Gibson 339 that I love. The tone unplugged is great but the Classic 57s in it aren't cutting it for me. I've settled on the Antiquity humbucker for the neck. I'm not sure about the Antiquity in the bridge though. I like my bridge pup to have a little more balls. I've read a lot of good things about the Whole Lotta Humbucker. Has anyone used the WLH in the bridge with an Antiquity in the neck? I'm wondering if I will be able to balance the output of the WLH and the Antiquity. Anyone know?

Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers use Alnico 2 bar magnets. This may very probably explain why they displease you.

Changing to A4 in the neck/Rhythm position pickup and UOA5 in the bridge/Treble position could be all that is necessary.

How difficult is it to swap magnets in a humbucker?

its pretty easy to swap magnets. do the pickups have covers?

the antiquity neck and wlh bridge would match up fine output wise

Jeremy,

Thanks for the input on the output of the pickups.

My 57 Classic's do have pickup covers.

Re: Pickups For 339

in order to swap the magnets you would take off the covers, then looses the four screws on the base plate, then carefully push the magnet out. then repeat the process in reverse to put the new one in and button it up. not hard but you need to be careful since pup wires are thin.

Re: Pickups For 339

Swap mags in which PU's? '57's have A2's. I assume you want more high-end, more output, or a firmer low end.

Ant's have aged A2's, which removes some of the little treble that A2's have. If you like warm neck HB's, an Ant would be a good choice, but for me they're just too muffled. I think they need a livelier magnet to bring out more of their dynamics.

WLH's are great PU's as is.

Forget the mag swap. I tried A5 and they were terrible. Seth Lover's would be a good choice.

You might as well get a pair of WLH's. They are awesome and will make your small guitar sound much bigger.
500k pots all round.
