Pickups For Black Beauty?

Re: Pickups For Black Beauty?

Oh. Ok. Given the extra wiring options of a freeway switch, I personally would definitely get one for a three hb guitar. And then I would practice with it so that I learned to choose the positions that I wanted, effortlessly.

LOL. I wired my 3 HB Warmoth Tele-Strat with the freeway switch, 3 push-pull volume (1 for each pickup) and 1 TBX overall tone control.

I used the wiring diagram that gave me
1. neck,
2. neck+bridge,
3. bridge,
4. neck+middle,
5. middle,
6. neck+middle+bridge when switch in middle p/up position and with middle volume pulled up.
7. middle+bridge
8. neck volume pulls up to split neck and middle pickup
9. bridge volume pulls up to split bridge pickup

I started this for fun and now it's a mental quiz whenever I play this guitar......

Re: Pickups For Black Beauty?

Very similar to my BB with Freeway and push-pulls on all pots:
1. Neck
2. Neck + bridge
3. Bridge
4. Bridge + middle
5. Middle or all three pups if tone pot switch is up
6. Neck + middle

The push-pulls on the three volume pots switch their respective pups between parallel (down) and series (up).

It took a while to get the hang of it all.

Creative, I like it. I think it's a waste to have three HB's and not be able to pair up various coil combinations when they're in coil cut mode. That's where you can get some different and useable tones. Next time I wire a 3 HB guitar, I want to figure out how I can use 4 push-pulls and a toggle to pair up these coils:

- the bridge slug coil paired with the middle screw coil
- bridge slug with neck screw (ala Artie's coil swap mod)
- middle slug with neck screw
- middle slug with bridge screw

Don't know how to wire this yet, but it would sure use the potential of a middle HB. With these 4 coil pairings, plus the HB's individually & combined (+7), along with the coil cuts individually (+3), in addition to various HB/singe coil combinations, you'd have a lot of tone options at your finger tips.

Re: Pickups For Black Beauty?

I've always tried to mentally test myself by coming up with this setup, but I can never work it out:

1- N (Split to P90)       4- N (Split to Rail)
2- N+B (Split to P90)  5- N+B (Split to Rail)
3- B (Split to P90)       6- B (Split to Rail)

It would have P-Rails for the neck and bridge and a Phat Cat in the middle. It would have 3 volumes and 3 tones with push pull coil splits on the volumes. One tone would control phase, one would change series and parallel between the individual pickups, and one would turn the middle on.

Essentially the freeway would work the same as a normal three way but on the left side the pickups would coil split to P90s and on the right they would switch to rails.

But it's too dang tricky for me to figure out.

Re: Pickups For Black Beauty?

Series/parallel requires 2 poles, so you'll need something like an S-1 to do two pickups.

- the bridge slug coil paired with the middle screw coil
- bridge slug with neck screw (ala Artie's coil swap mod)
- middle slug with neck screw
- middle slug with bridge screw

I can't do the second one on that list, but the other three I can.

It seems than all of us using a Freeway switch have got it setup the same way :P
