I have an Epi Joe Pass Regent w/ a Spruce top and I guess laminated maple body.

What p/ups would one get for such a guitar? Seth Lovers? '59's? Alnico II's w/ gold covers?

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

what kind of tone are you looking for from it? what kid of music will you be playing?

all those you mentioned would sound great ... just depends on your needs ...

hard to go wrong with a set of Seths :D

cheers

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

That'd be for jazz. Clean, dark, round jazz tones. I'm no jazzer, but I love the jazz sound and I'm trying to learn some jazz-style improv. I'll be playing mostly w/ a pick, 'compin' w/ pick or thumb, and sometimes playing unaccompanied solos fingerstyle. Sometimes I might engage a LITTLE BIT of chorus and/or overdrive for modern tones, but I prefer the totally clean jazz sound. CLEAN, WARM, FAT AND ARTICULATE... yum.

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

cool .. IMO, sounds like a job for a set of A2 seths ...

enjoy

+1 for Seths you'll not be disappointed!

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

I agree with the Seth assessment. Great pickups....and they Kill in a hollowbody. Don't rule out the phat cats though. For a whisper to a scream, they'll get ya there with beautiful, detailed single coil tone.

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

Thanks. No huge problems w/ feedback, then? I mean, I think they're "unpotted".

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

I haven't used the cats, but I'm assuming they do a good Grant Green impression? I'm really curious about these pups. A friend of mine plays an Epiphone Casino with P-90s in it and gets a really cool tone. They are fat and get a cool bite on the attack I haven't heard from regular humbuckers...

I'm assuming the cats are great. However, I think I'll go w/ the Seths first, since I'd rather go the humbucking route. I'm flirting w/ the idea of getting a used, cheap Sheraton II and putting cats on it, but it'll be a long time before that happens.

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

I'm jazzin on a Paul studio with P-90's. Love'm!!!!

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

If your brave and cheap (like me) just replace the magnets in your stock buckers with Alnico 2. Did that in my Ibanez AF75TD and I love the results. They actually sound like really good pickups now !!

No problem with feedback at all and I play about 2 foot from my amp!

I'm cheap, but an electronically-challenged coward.

I'm going to e-mail you tonight or tomorrow about the wiring on another guitar of mine. I got to your website through a link from the High Order pickups website.

Thanks for your suggestion, later....

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

The pickups in Joe Pass's original Gibson ES-175 that your guitar is based on would have been closer to a set of Duncan 59's. The 59's would be similar to what Wes Montgomery used in his L-5 too. But the Seth's would sound fatter in the mids and have smoother, warmer highs. Either would be a great set in that guitar...as would the Duncan Jazz set. But I think I'd go with Seths. Lew

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

I work closely with an Archtop builder. When he builds a Guitar for a customer much conversation is made about PUPS and scale length. We just finished a Arctop built like a 175 whicj has 24.75" scale. The customer had supplied us with a set of Tom Holmes PUPS. The guitar sounded too thin so we replaced them with Alnico 2 Pros, and there it was Wes in the Box. IMO the A2's are the best PAF sounding PUP I have heard. I like the warmth that they offer. The Seths are also very good, but to my ears I like the A2's in an Archrtop guitar.

Alnico 2 Pros, Seths, or Phat Cats, though I recommend taking about 1,100 turns (1.0k ohms) off the neck model Phat Cat.

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

I loved the Phats I had in my Joe Pass axe. Great old school jazz tones from the neck with enoug bite and twang from the bridge for country pickin'.

I've since sold that guitar, but I do have the PC's in my Sheraton and they sound fab. Lots of bite and sparkle with a great punchy response.

Re: Pickups for cheap hollowbody archtop....

Is there a bridge pickup I could use in my Joe Pass to get John Lee Hooker or Chuck Berry sound? One or both would be great! I love the sound of the neck pickup it's the reason I bought the guitar.
Thanks.

I think a set of GFS Retro-tron nashville hots would sound cool.
