Anways, this is a ZOMBIE thread (i.e. old thread revived from the dead by a careless poster). The issues have been discussed a million times and the results are always the same...


FACT: Pittbull has multiple personalities

FACT: No one knows what EVH's setup was for sure

FACT: There's more truth in OJ's testimony than in Eddie's own statements

FACT: There are many ways to simulate/emulate/replicate/acheive "THAT" sound

FACT: For every one person who will actually acheive "THAT" sound, thousands more are standing by, ready to tell them they don't have it

FACT: There will never be a single, definitive agreement on what effects/amp/guitar/pickups/cable/wood/dental floss/women's hygiene products/facial hair style will get you "THAT" sound

Still, I have to commend the OP's powers of disclaimer to attempt to avoid BS answers here, and also commend masta'c's powers of reality on what we'll never ever know for sure.

depends on which of the early tones you are after?
he used many different pu's in different guitars through the years.
strat with a super d for the 1st album tracks with the bar
destroyer with stock super 70's for the rest of the album
2nd album go with a strat with a 78 or any A2 9K paf type will go there as proven time and time again on various clips
his latter sammy **** use a CC or a JB on 5150,ou812
after that on the EBMM sig stuff use a AT-1 by dimarzio
for the wolfgang stuff use ear plugs

Why revive this for that? The Ed threads seem to draw out some of the more deluded denizens of this board its better that they stay buried.

Seymour Duncan SH5 Custom is also a great chose for the VH1 sound.(first album)

I think it depends on your definition of "getting" the tone..
Does it mean 100% exactly like eddie? Then it is impossible, because even ed himself dunno how to recreate it today
Or is it 90-95% that you can use to perfectly nail his song with big grin in your face?

If it is the latter, I can get early VH sound with almost every pickup I've tried.. Even my blackouts with correct gain level and EQ-ing

(a lot of people are willing to spend $$$ to get extra 1-2% though)

For a overall best 9k PAF the guitar force ERUPTOR is hands down the best PAF i have tried. it is a A@ but has the tightness of a A5 pup and the power of a medium output model,when you back off the volume in the guitar it cleans up perfect!it is not a VH only pup by any means!

Ed,

I'm with you. I have guitars with both CC and EVH Frankie in them and the CC is too loose on the low end for early VH. The Frankie is not exactly there either, but closer than CC.

I still have yet to try a 78. However, I will have to get one sometime. I'll make that my New Years resolution to get one and try it out. :14:

I disagree... A Blackout will get you there better than any of the options listed... jk. I'm for the '78 it sounds awesome for VH1

78 or Pearly Gates. Alnico II for sure. Slightly overwound. You need that high mids/subdued treb.

But it's ALL about the amp. The closest of which (IMO) is the Marshall AFD100.

Fender Stratocaster (standard trem) + SD 78 -> MXR Phase 90 -> Echoplex -> Marshall AFD100

I liked the demon with a a2 a real lot and not just for early VH either! Kind of like a PG/59 hybrid pup BUT
for the earliest tone before the second record get a dimarzio super D and a suhr sl68
