Re: Pickups for early VH sound

Yeah, I think the base price is $3.2k for a handwired amp. Dread to think what it would cost getting this thing to Aus, plus needing a step transformer so it can go to 240v...

Re: Pickups for early VH sound

There's also the problem with expense. Hunt down an actual Plexi and variac it. Or better yet, get a Soldano SLO? Yeah, thanks I'd rather make a few mortgage payments.

Tone costs money.

Having said that, I built my on Metroamp kit (looking at their website, they don't seem to sell them anymore) for ~1k + powescaling back in 2008.

Ahahaha tone costs money? And your trying to recreate the sound that a kid made with a pieced together partscaster and what at the time was just a 10 year old used tube amp.

You guys are missing 2 things Eds fingers and Ed templemann

You can tell that to people till your blue in the face and it will still come back to "what pickup for the early VH sound" , and btw its Ted Templeman but you already knew that.

Re: Pickups for early VH sound

I think amp is important too. Get a decent tube amp with high gain tubes in it and set it up with greenbacks.

As far as pickups go, I like the custom custom for early van halen. Picked a OLP MM1 EVH bridge pickup for $25, that truly is a hidden gem good sound for the price and close to Ed's balance sound. The new wolfgangs are nice too.

Ironlcally that OLP bridge p'u is a 13.6K large ceramic build that happens to be the same specs as the mighty mite in eddies first B/W charvel strat:14:

I thought the Mighty Mite was something around 9K (are you comparing the neck pickup)? Shockingly, I thought the OLP had a Alnico 5 magnet in it, but searches are showing ceramic. Regardless, the OLP pup is a pretty cool pickup for the price, fat mids like the CC. Thanks for the info Ed, now I know I have a Alnico 2, Alnico 5, and Ceramic Pups across my 3 guitars.
