Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

I have 57s in my Epi SG. No complaints! They can be a bit gritty at times. You decide if that is good or not

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

- I my opinion, the open coils in my SG will look pretty ugly, so I think I'll have to buy the ones with nickel covers (wich is more expensive too). Do you guys think it worths the extra money?

Every player has his or her aesthetics likes and dislikes. If you feel they covers are worth the extra money, by all means get them.

- The Custom 5 is the SH-14, right? In the samples here at seymourduncan.com the SH-14 didn't thrill me at all. I don't know, but it doesn't sound clear. But, according to you guys, I think they will sound way better in my SG, am I right?

Thanks again.

The sound samples only serve to provide about as scientific of a means of comparison as you can get. Most of the clips were recorded by the same guy with the same guitar through the same amplifier. While the clips are a good way to compare Seymour Duncan pickups to each other, they can in no way be indicative of how a particular pickup will react to your guitar and your amplifier. On top of that, it is clear that the C5 clips were not recorded at the same time or with the same rig as the other sound samples.

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

Thank you, guys. You really changed my mind and I'm about to order the Custom 5 SH-14 for the bridge tomorrow (is this correct?). As soon as possible, I will come back here and post my first impressions (remember that international order may take 5 to 10 weeks untill i get them here in Brazil). The 59n will be an upgrade for february I think... Then I will post my impressions again.

Thank you one more time. You were great in helping me.

That's what we're here for, putting another youth on the road to a brighter tomorrow.

Let us know what you think of the C5 when you get it.

Yeah, good stuff. And if you don't like it, you know who to blame.
Blueman.

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

I originally wanted covers on my H/H strat, but decided to try without them first. Just check my user profile photo to see how it turned out. I say buy them uncovered first and give them a week before you go to cover them. Uncovered generally has more bite and sharpness than covered, which is warmer and rounder. Clapton and the old 60's rock guys removed the pickup covers to get at that sharper tone, and since it stuck. Try it uncovered at least.

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

The SD Soundclips can show how one pickup differs in EQ from another but that's about it. No pickup is going to sound the same in your guitar played through your amp as it would installed in a test guitar through whatever method SD used to record the sound samples with. But you can tell from listening, for example, that a Custom Custom has more mids and smoother highs than a C5 which has brighter highs and fewer mids in comparism. So it's useful in that way. It shows you difference in the EQ of each pickup relative to each other - but it's not going to show you how that pickup will sound in YOUR guitar.

Re: Pickups for Epiphone SG G-400

Hello there. I installed the Custom 5 yesterday night and I'm here to tell you my first impressions. First, thank you guys for recommending me such a nice pickup. It fits my needs and expectations perfectly. It's exactly what I wanted.

The sound is very clear, not muddy at all and it has less distortion compared to the epi's pickup. I just loved it and I'm really looking forward to get the 59 for the neck.
