Pickups for Gary Moore tone

This is a shot of a pre blues era with a Les Paul. I'm sure he did alot of promo shots (using guitars he didn't actually play) but I don't think all his 80's stuff was strat tone either.

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

Jeff B thanks for the site. I found this picture and it kind of confirms my idea that he wasn't playing a wimpy strat with 3 single coils throughout the 80's. When you said stock Fender Strat thats what I was picturing. I'm pretty sure I saw live Gary Moore with him playing a Jackson like this or some other super strat with humbuckers (definately not a stock Fender Strat).

I also wouldn't be surprised if he played an Ibanez Roadstar like this either back in the day as thats the kind of Strat I pictured him playing back then.

Thats not what I was saying...I should clarify

COP, VOF, and WWM are def the "strat phase"...clearly obvious (also the LP jr. on VOF here and there)..when he was endorsing Ibanez he was actually playing Hamers (Neil Carter was playing them first actually, then Gary started to). Run for Cover was mostly the Hamers...then he got into the single pup Charvels w/ EMGs, PRS, Heritage, etc. But if ya look at that link you'll see he owns alot of different guitars..what he played on stage as "beaters" and in the studio were two different things.

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

This has got to be the funniest picture of Gary Moore ever. The first thing I thought of was Duran Duran when I saw this....

"I'm also using an Ibanez Roadstar and Ibanez know I use a Strat and accept that. Grover Jackson at Charvel builds me the odd one or two guitars, and of course I still have my old Les Paul Junior." ~Gary Moore / source: Music U.K. (1984.09.)

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

I did Jeff, you made it sound like he had an endorsement with Ibanez but claimed he never played them ("Ibanez (admitted to not really playing them ever, but he had the endorsement")). This says otherwise, right from the mouth of Gary Moore. How does, "I'm also using an Ibanez Roadstar and Ibanez know(s) I use a Strat and accepts that." mean he doesn't really play them ever?

Substitute "much" for "ever" ....poor wording on my part.

He was endorsing Ibanez at the time of VOTF, but wasnt' playing them on that tour...and sure as hell didn't record the album with them....just the strats and the paula. With Lizzy they had a BC Rich endorsement...played em in videos and such...but Scott and Gary never played them otherwise.

Thats always been the case with Gary....he's make his necc apperance with an edorsement...but when it came right down to it...he used what he wanted..not what he was paid to.

regardless... sorry for the thread hijack Benjy..I'll stop now :)

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

Yeah sorry for the hijack here too Bengy, thanks Jeff for some backround on Gary Moores axes. :-)

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

As obvious from the above discussion, he had a very wide spectrum of tones.

The tones he has on blues for greeny is one of my all time favorites. And I even don't like him that much, but that CD is magnificient.

Butch, he uses the out of phase bridge neck tone on "need your love so bad" in that album. Great playing too. I think the whole album is done with Peter Greens LP.

The closest I could get to his tone was with a LP standard with a set of timbuckers. I must say I am very well satisfied with the results I achieved.

S Deco 2 neck for sure. I don't know about the bridge.

That would be the one. However, AFAIK, Gary doesn't use the neck and bridge pickups together. At least, I haven't heard him.... So, flipping the neck pickup and not flipping the magnet too doesn't really buy you a whole lot.

Butch & guys,

Gary uses the in-between position on the "Blues for Greenie" CD throughout, like Peter did. As for his '59 LP's he uses (or used to anyway), the Peter Green one and another one that might actually be the one that Ronnie Montrose lost. The second one sounds hotter to my ears. Both have the original PAF's.

As for his current tone, I'd go with Seths or Burstbuckers (which are used in his signature model). Gary uses a lot more treble than most LP players, which gives his tone a bit of a difference.

Jeff

Re: Pickups for Gary Moore tone

I stand corrected. I went back and listened to some of Gary's stuff and you guys are right. Gary is all over the in-between position on Greeny. Thanks for pointing it out.

No sweat. Gary changes his tone all the time. His newer stuff sounds a bit more processed, or distorted than the "Blues Alive" days
