pickups for Hamer Chaparral

Hi all I am new to this forum so I hope I am not breaking any forum rules by posting here first.

I have just bought a Hamer Chaparral but there are no pickups so it's like a blank canvas really. It has HSH configuration. I am not sure about the woods but I think it is ebony finger board with boomerang inlays.

I am going to use it with heavier type of rock and metal and the tone I really like is Vernon Reid on the Stain album. I mainly do rhythm but the odd lead so I am looking for something in that area. I like high gain type of sound and use wampler triple wreck quite a lot.

I would really appreciate some ideas since I am totally lost.

If it helps I usually play MusicMan Axis and like it quite a bit and I do appreciate the pickups being DiMarzios, but I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

I have another question. I am very new to this pickup stuff. What is an f spaced one and would that fit into the Chaparral?

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

Thanks guys for the comments.
I have found Duncan Distortion TB6 and SD STK (I am not sure which on) going for cheap. Would these work and if so what suggestions for neck?

Thanks for all your help guys

For something that would look very cool in addition to sounding great in that guitar---try the Duncan Parallel Axis Trembucker Distortion, and matching PA Classic Stack for the neck. :D I played exactly such a creature on a new Chap many years ago with that combo, although I believe it had the standard, not Distortion TB at the bridge. The Distortion matches the character of the guitar better (I have it in one of my Charvel 475s and it is a killer!).

F spaced pickups have a wider spacing for guitars with floyd rose or floating trems. So, yes, would be good in the bridge position.

IIRC, the first time I ever saw the Parallel Axis pickups, they were standard equip in one of the Hamer models.

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

i have a chapparell and i love it. its my only floyd guitar these days. if you havent got the duncan distortion (which is a fine pup) then i think the patb2 bridge and patb1n combo is good. i havent heard the patb stack in so long i cant really comment on it but i do like duncans new stack plus models. i use a dimarzio ft2 in the neck (wired to a series parallel switch), the stock rails pup in parallel in the middle and a duncan custom shop 17k alnico 5 with allen head poles. its a beast

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

I like the Parallel Axis idea...a Distortion in the bridge, with an original in the neck. Complete it with a Stack in the middle. It will be noiseless, and cut through anything.

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

What were the stock pickups of the Chaparral......they were amazing in mine... absolutely loved it.

Re: pickups for Hamer Chaparral

So final question, the guy sent me three pickups with the guitar. Bill Lawrence 500 xl, SD ssl4 and DiMarzio paf pro. I had already bought the tb6 and a stk s6. Can anyone suggest which of the two single coils I should put in and why. For now I am going to put the paf and tb6 in the guitar and maybe something else in the future.

This guitar is in brilliant condition and the neck is amazing. I will never understand why these guitars fell out of favour.

I think you should try ALL of those pickups in there in as many different combinations and you can manage.

See what works for you.
