Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

I want to replace the Schaller pups in my 535 and need some suggestions. I found the Schallers to muddy, especially the neck. I have SD '59s in my Les Paul and love them! Suggestions for my 535? Thinking about jazz in neck and myabe JB or '59 in bridge? What about Seth Lovers? Will the JB be too hot for a semi-hollow guitar? I usually play clean, with a little dirt at times. Thanks for any suggestions. Also, have problems finding nickel covers, good place to get SD pups?

Hey man welcome to the forum!

To be honest it all depends on your personal taste. I'm not a big fan of the JB, and wouldn't personally put it in anything...much less a 335...but I digress. If you mainly play clean there isn't much of a reason for a high output pup.

You could try another set of 59s if you like that Clapton Wheels of Fire 335 tone.

If you want smootheness, and warmth and a plucky midrange I highly recommend the Seths. Great pups!

Here's my PAF breakdown, maybe it will help you out a bit.

Antiquity---A pup that is hand made by Seymour or MJ that has been artificially aged. The magnet has been degaussed and the cover has been distresses along with the screws so as to appear vintage. Everything is done to make these pups as close to an original that you would buy from a collector that was out of a guitar that was played everyday and gigged with. They have complex mids and are smooth. They are available in A2 or A5 magnet varieties. Vintage Single Conductor Wire

The 59---The 59 is the quintessential A5 PAF (patent applied for) pup. Imagine getting in a time machine and going back to 1959 and swiping a brand new A5 pup from the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo and bringing it forward to today. They have found most homes in many neck slots. It has symetrical coils and lots of quack. It has thumping bass, a scooped mid, and cutting highs. Vintage Single Conductor Wire

The Seth Lover---This pup is as true to the original as can be. This pup is unpotted and comes standard with a gold, or nickel pup cover. It has an A2 magnet and has good quack and fair mids. For this pup imagine going back in time to 1955 and grabbing one of the very first PAF's before they debuted in the LP's. This pup is warm and creamy, but can also get bright with the tone knob on 10. Vintage Single Conductor Wire

The Alnico 2 Pro---The warmest of the Duncan PAF line. It has symetrical coils and is a modern take on the A2 PAFs. It has round bass and smooth treble, it also has lots of mids to make the guitar really sing. It will warm up the coldest or shrillest of guitars. The most well known Alnico 2 Pro user is Slash of Velvet Revolver and GNR. Standard 4 Conductor Wire

Pearly Gates---The PG is the hottest of the Duncan PAF line. It has asymetrical (mismatched) coils and an A2 magnet. The mismatched coils give this particular pup its rude personality. It has a frequency push in the Presence/Cut knob frequency band. This is the "Sizzle" PG owner talk about. It has the most mids of the Ducan PAF line and is also the hottest. Its patron is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Standard 4 conductor Wire

The Jazz---The jazz is the pup that bridges the gap between Vintage and Modern pups. Its output is at or around the vintage level. Don't let the name fool you this pup is very versatile and smooth. It has an A5 magnet and is very widely used in the neck slot. It is articulate regardless of the tuning as well. This pup negociates cleans or overdrive very well. Standard 4 Conductor Wire

Hope something there helps!

Wellcome to the forum !

You might also consider Phat Cats, along with the ones you have listed.

What type(s) of music do you play? What amp do you use?

There are several forumites that sell SD pickups and parts.

Lew of lewsguitars
&

BadaBing of MartinSixStringGuitars ( not sure if the company name is correct....Sorry BadaBing)

Good Luck in finding the tone you are looking for.

My vote would be for Seths in that guitar. Sweet tone with very lively dynamics and lots of versatility, I love them. I just bought myself an Epi Dot and I'm putting some Seth's in there as soon as I get the time.

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

The Heritage 535 as I remember it (a friend has one) was a nice sounding guitar...... his had Duncans in it already.... not sure which. You might want to give us some feedback on what kind of music you play , what amps you uses and what you are not happy with about the guitar before we can advise you. Luke gave some excellent descriptions on the pickups voices here, but my vote would be with the AlnicoII pro set or a Jazz(N) and a 59(B). Love those combos!

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

Thanks for the great replys, VERY informative. I play in a Zydec0/Cajun, rockin' country type band in south Louisiana. Our band is accordian driven, with strong rhythm comping (by me!) on guitar. I play mostly clean, with some overdrive with my Boss blues driver. I play throught a Heritage Patriot amp, which is a 2X12 40 watt 6L6 amp, think twin black face, with nice tweed tone when cranked.

I am leaning towards a jazz neck, with a '59 bridge or a set of Seth Lovers. Opinions again? Thanks again for all the useful info!

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

I like the jazz neck a lot in my sheraton II, for the bridge i'd think a pearly gates would fit.

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

Definately go with the Seth's. I just put one in the bridge of my beloved Dot, and it sounds like Heaven! I'm sure it would just sing in that 535! The Gibby '57 Classic is a damn fine pickup, too.

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

Based on experience with a 535 that came with Antiquities, I'm guessing that alnico 5 pups might be better for him in terms of well-defined attack vs. the warmth of alnico 2. (Basing this mostly on S-D soundclips.) A Jazz neck & 59 bridge may be the ticket...

hope this helps

Welcome to the Forum!

Great suggestions from the guys (as usual). I'd go with Seths or Antiquities.:smokin:

Re: Pickups for Heritage 535 (like 335)

Are the Antiquities like an aged Seth Lover model? Similiar in tone?

Antiquities and Seths are similar, but the Ants are smoother to my ears. The Seths have more of an initial "bite" to them, but have plenty 'O mids.

As far as an "aged" Seth, that's a good question. Maybe Evan knows.

Luke,

You did a great job describing the pups:smokin:
I don't mean to nit-pick, but Clapton used the '64 SG on "Wheels of Fire". He didn't start using the 335 & Firebird, fulltime, until a few months later.
