Pickups for my guitar

I got an Epiphone Les Paul Standard with the SD Distortion Mayhem set, I have had them it for about 2 months and im already bored =/

So I did some research and came up some ideas.
Here's a list of the pickup combos I thought of

57 Classic (neck) and 57 Classic Plus (bridge)
Pearly Gates (neck) and Gibson Dirty Fingers (bridge)
57 Reissue (neck) and Dimarzio Super Distortion (bridge)

I'm gonna start performing at bars and clubs so I'm gonna be playing a lotta blues, hard rock, oldies, basically no heavy heavy stuff.....

HELP!!!!

Re: Pickups for my guitar

What kind of amp will you be using? That's important because you might not need such high output pickups (excluding of course the classic +). I think you might want to try something a little more well rounded being that you have both blues and hard rock listed (again not talking about the classics as I've never tried them). You probably don't need anything all that high output in the bridge, especially since it might not balance to well with the lower output neck pickups. I'm not personally a big fan of a modern high output pickup with a vintage output one though.

Honesty a set of 59's or PGs can pretty much do anything as long as your amp is up to par, and they sound great in pretty much everything including LPs. And if you want a little more sizzle a custom 5 in the bridge is really like a hot 59 (i have one in my Epi LP right now and I like it). Don't worry so much about the output of the pickups because, honestly, its easy to add gain. Its not easy to make a hot pickup sound good clean. 2¢ added.

Re: Pickups for my guitar

im probably gonna b using a marshall half/full stack ( I havent decided on which on i want. tubes or no tubes......) But i wanna use some pedals. Jekyll and Hyde and maybe a Zakk Wylde OD are the ones i really want......

Re: Pickups for my guitar

Then you definitely don't need high output pickups at all with an OD. Trust me lol :)

One of the things I learned is when you wanna play loud and aggressive hot pickups are great and sure are fun, but you can't really tame them all that much to get nice softer tones for blues and jazz and even older rock stuff.

Remember though that pickups are only part of the tonal equation. Most of your tone comes from your amp. A crappy guitar through a good amp sounds a lot better than an amazing guitar through a marshall mg combo ;)

Re: Pickups for my guitar

I find that for most things 59's will get you close enough. You might try the Custom 5/59 combo though if you plan on doing heavier stuff, or if you just want some more output from your bridge humbucker without compromising your clean tone. That's just my recommendation though. What exactly don't you like about the DDs?

Re: Pickups for my guitar

i wanna get an ESP Eclipse in the future. It's gonna be main guitar for all the heavy stuff.
I'm also planning on getting the Line 6 HD100 watt head with the cab. The DDs are very versatile. So no sound is gonna b better than the other. U know what I'm getting at?

Re: Pickups for my guitar

if you're not going to play heavy heavy stuff i wouldn't think you should really need a dirty fingers.
IMO, you should get a set of Pearly Gates, a set of 59's or maybe Custom 8/'59 or Custom 5/PG

Re: Pickups for my guitar

So you just wanna have this guitar for more of the rock/blues and vintage side of stuff and the Eclipse for like super heavy stuff? Were you planning on putting the DDs in the Eclipse or something?

Re: Pickups for my guitar

I would never replace the EMGs with DDs. But yea i want the Epiphone for the rock/blues and vintage side and the ESP for the heavy stuff.

Re: Pickups for my guitar

Oh ok I see now lol. I just don't know what you want to accomplish by changing pickups in the Epi. Like what would you change about the DDs if you could? In other words what do you want out changing your pickups specifically?

Re: Pickups for my guitar

ok, vintage, blues/rock sound..
i think you, IMO, should get seymour duncan antiquities or seymour duncan seth lovers.
:)

Re: Pickups for my guitar

A5 neck and A2 bridge mag swap? cheap option

Although I do agree with you, not everyone feels comfortable doing that so I didn't suggest it. But, that is a great solution and its much cheaper at around only like $10. Doesn't the Distortion have those two mini ceramic mags or is that another pickup I'm thinking of?

Re: Pickups for my guitar

Ok - here is what I hear:

You got a guitar, and replaced the pups without any idea what they sounded like and after 2 months don't like them. You have no idea what amp you will be using, but it will be a Marshall with either tubes or solid state.

You are 16 and are going to be playing clubs - mostly blues and hard rock.

Here it is:

I think you should leave the guitar alone. Sit the eff down, and play the dang thing instead of having all of the rock star / blues god fantasies. Get off of harmony central, musicians friend, or whatever gear sites you are into, and learn to play for the next two years. Then come back and ask that question again.

Don't leave the SDUG. But definitely come around, and read and learn. Because right now, yo sound like some kid who just got high score on Guitar Hero and has decided that means you have skillz and need some serious pro gear.

I think you need to seriously play, and let all of the gear BS alone for a while until you know what you are talking about.

But to end on a positive note - just put the 57 classics in there. They can play whatever you'll need through a decent amp. But for now, your Ibanez Toneblaster will do.

OMG I almost just spilled water all over my laptop lol.

A little harsh no, Aceman? (funny, but maybe a little harsh :))
