all the pickup recommendations have been good. i should have asked if the OP can solder first...

i don't think the distortion does; i've never had a new one though, and could be wrong. they both have that big ceramic bar mag tho.

i read from info re 500Ts that those ceramics are C5 grade and not C8, am assuming that SD use the same ones. random note

Up to a certain point, no matter how old the OP is, he can buy pickups and swap them as he likes if he's got the dough to do it. In the end, if he can't play, the crowd will let him know! It's his gear and he can do whatever he wants with it. He has to start somewhere and learn along the way.

Having that said, practice goes a long way....boy did I practice back when I had the time at 16....

Im not gonna lie im a little hurt. =(
I might not have the experience Aceman has (this guy is 42)
I research everything I do before I do it. and according to the reviews the DDs sounded great with the Epiphone Les Paul. when i plugged the guitar in to my Line 6 Spider 3 I wasn't all that satisfied.
I dont plan on playing at bars/clubs right now . Those are plans for the future when i'm 18. By then HOPEFULLY i will have plenty of experience.
The pickup ideas were just out of curiousity. Thanks for making me feel like crap....

Ahhh. Line six Spider. I'm not a fan...however:

Bit of advice for every player, and one I did not learn until I was way older than you! Learn to play the amp.

You should be able to craft some seriously awesome tones out of the Spider. That is what it is about. Pick the right amp model, the right gain level (less than you'd think most likely), tweek the eq appropriately, and go for it.

No intention to hurt the feelings dude. I'm just saying you are a little all over the place in the original post. No shame in being young. You can research a bunch of amps all you want. But only your ears can tell you what you like. And reading can tell you a lot.

It just sounds to me like you have read wayyyyyyyyy to much and not played enough. Get some serious playing under the belt, then your ears will tell you all you need to do.

Apologies for any harshness - had a bad experience with an EMo kid on another board the other day. Tolerance was running low!

What sort of play list would yo imagine playing in this club someday, in what sort of band?

I understand your responses. However, take a step back and read the post again. I understand the simple basic question - what pup?

But there was so much wrong with that post that sending some dude off in search of the perfect pup was just #297 on his list of things to do, that I could not in good conscience do that!

Was I harsh? Perhaps so -no, definitely so! My job in this universe isn't to hand out candy to fat kids. It's to shoot straight and keep it real.

Let's go the extra mile and get a kid started in the right direction. Not the "more better gear" cycle of doom.

What I plan to do right now is stick with the DD set, I'm not gonna go crazy trying to find the "perfect" pup(s).... I plan on getting an ESP Eclipse in the future, its gonna be my main guitar for all the heavy things. But yea my Epiphone LP is gonna be used for all the blues and vintage things, later on i'll change the pups on the dam thing. After all I got a long way to go before I start playing in front of crowds.
I would like to say thanks to all the people who contributed ideas and spent posting replies. I appreciate it very much

i don't see why age has to have anything to do with it, for all we know the guy started playing at 10 and is ready to start building his technical knowledge and trying different equipment.
when i was 16 i'd been playing for a few years, was playing in pubs with terrible gear and could really have used advice. your advice is usually great aceman, this emo kid must have taken a bit out of you, so to speak

Aceman, i agree with you. I have a mate who 'learned' how to play via guitar hero. He just has quick fingers..thats it. He can 'solo' ok/quickly..but it's sterile, no soul, no tone and can't do chords. I love him to death...but i had to giggle when he told me he couldn't play chords!

I understand what Aceman says whether it be harsh or not. I am 18 and I have played in bars. I own a Marshall JVM with many tube swaps and modifications. Have a few Les Pauls, a Mockingbird, a cheap Tele, and a project guitar. I was in a cover band then and we mostly played classic and hard rock.

Having said all that just sit down and relax. The only reason I messed around with pickups was because I had guitars I was set on and an amp I was definitely set on and there were things I needed to fine tune. When you have your rig and learn more about how your rig works and how pickups work and what each one does then you can buy that stuff and tweak around. I thought the same thing Ace did when you listed stuff you wanted to buy or whatever. Just sound like a kid who is eager and excited. Nothing wrong with that just it is a financial risk for yourself. Just chill, learn, and play more. You prolly dont have the ears for pickup changes anyways.

All i'm saying is that I might not have a lot of experience. I asked this question to learn from people's opinions and experiences. As it turns out, my idea failed and I learned something new today... BTW dr. ad i do not know wtf u r saying

We have been having a conversation off line. It's all good. The number one message here though, I think, is that a bunch of gear hounds are saying it isn't about the gear.

Now - if I would stop posting here and practice more....

I didn't mean to offend you Ace, and I agree with you 100%. I just thought maybe it was a bit on the not so nice end. I know its all good, I just wanted to let you know I wasn't trying to offend :)

rather than getting new pickups, i'd suggest learning how to do some basic guitar switch wiring like parallel, splits, and phase. this way you'll learn how some of that stuff works, how to solder(if you don't already know how), and you'll end up with a more versatile guitar. you can find the things you need here:

http://www.stewmac.com for push-pull pots.
radioshack for 22awg braided wire, solder, and other soldering accessories. don't get an iron there though, those are junk. get a 40w weller soldering iron from a hardware store.

don't bother changing the pickups until you get a decent amp. spiderIIIs are alright for beginner/practice amps, but they don't really let your guitar's personality come through. i had the 15w model when i first started playing and i'm soooo glad i don't have it anymore. the 75w and up versions aren't horribly bad though.
