I'm not all that bright: What is 60's Garage? This will me at least.
As far as '77 punk, I think you are in luck as the variety of pickups back then was literally 2% of the variety nowadays. Guys like Steve Jones (Pistols) and Mick Jones (Clash) and hundreds of known bands on either side of the Atlantic still had same set-up... stock Les Paul, a Marshall, a stompbox or two...maybe a DiMarzio Super distortion in the bridge.
There are recent threads mentioning the killer "Live at Leeds" was recorded with P90's in an SG.
Seymour puts out great pups (duuuuuuuuuuuhhh), but the Gibson Dirty Fingers is one snarling/loud/proud pickup. It has a definite 100% humbucker tone. Not like a P90. You may want to "purpose" build this guitar for either P90's or humbuckers as the "Live at Leeds" tone and some of the others covers LOTS of musical ground.

A huge +1 on the "idols" list. Greg Ginn is a god too me. Ron Asheton/James Williamson (Stooges) would make my list too.

The Phat cat sounds nice! All this recent talk on the board about P90's has me thinking a getting another guitar just for that wonderful open "without having that....eewwww yucky strat" tone. The punkish snarl would almost seem built-in as long as the signal level is is high enough to drive the amp.

I agree...if you want your LP to sound like it has P90's in it. That's what was used on the Live at Leeds album: P90's.
Personally I'd go with humbuckers though.
I've had great luck putting a Jazz neck or 59 neck pickup paired with a JB in the three Epi Les Pauls that I've worked on.

I had an Epi '56 GoldTop w/P90's but I do a lot of recording at home and they were too noisy and microphonic. That's why I got rid of it and got the standard. I loved the tone though. Anyway, 60's garage is the precusor to punk. Too many bands to list, check out the Nuggets or Pebbles comps. for details.

If the '90s are too noisy, a set of 59's would work well.
If you want a bright, twangy, and raunchy sound, check out TV Jones' TV'trons. They are Filter'trons made to fit a 'bucker cavity. They'll make your LP sound a bit like a Gretsch, which is cool for those 60's garage sounds.
