Pickups for powerful distortion tones on semi-hollow

Hi,

A friend has a Epiphone Sheraton with still the stock pickups but he wants to change them, for now, just the bridge one, because he feels the cleans are wonderful, but when he kicks in the distortion thin, buzzy and whimpy. He wants something that he could achieve modern distortion tones but still having good clean tones. What would you recommend ?

He's considering a JB, but i discouraged him because i've played with JBs and I always felt a weirdness on the clean sounds on those pickups, even with very warm guitars. He's also considering a 59", and i'd recommend it, but i am affraid it may have too much low end and ends up making the guitar too boomy. I'd make him get a CUstom 5, but here in Brazil it's a PITA to find it.

What would you recommend me to tell him ? What would you have to say about those options I told (JB and 59) ? Any other suggestions ?

Thanks,
Ivan

The only semi-hollow I've heard the JB in is a Yamaha AES 620...it sounds pretty darn good in the bridge position.

I'd stay away from the JB in a Sheraton. I had one in there for a couple of weeks and it was all mids with no bottom end and no sparkle to the highs.

I would much rather go with a Custom, C5, 59, Pearly Gates, or a Phat Cat.

A 59B for the bridge pickup will not be muddy or boomy...not the least bit.

A 59N or B used as a neck pickup can sound a little boomy sometimes...but never the bridge pickup.

You'll get a tone like Eric Johnson gets when he's playing his 60's ES-335 and sounding exactly like Eric Clapton did with Cream.

I've got another thread running here about pickups for the Sheraton II, but I'm not looking for lots of distortion...just a little bit of extra dirt. This is some useful feedback. Thanks.

Custom Custom is nice in the bridge and the APH-1 in the neck.
